Ballet에 있어서 신고전주의 경향에 관한 연구

Abstract

20세기에 들어서면서 발레는 디아길레프(Serge Diaghilev)의 Ballet Russes를 통하여 스타일과 표현에 있어서 많은 중요한 변화가 있었다. 신고전주의(Neo-Classicism)는 이러한 변화의 양상중의 하나로서 Ballet Russes의 마지막 안무가였던 죠지 발란쉰(George Balanchine)에 의해서 전개되어졌으며, 이고르 스트라빈스키(Igor Stravinsky)는 그의 창조적인 작품활동에 많은 영향을 준 음악가이다. 그들은 각자 자신의 예술분야에서 대표적인 신고전주의의 기수로 여겨 지고 있으며 동시대에 활동한 예술가들로 상호간에 빈번한 교류와 작업을 통하여 서로의 예술활동에 영향을 미쳤다. 본 논문의 목적은 이러한 그들의 작품 활동의 성향을 살펴보고, 공동작업의 산물인 발레 작품을 분석함으로써 그들의 신고전주의 발레에 나타나는 일반적인 경향을 유추해내는데 있다. 신고전주의는 낭만주의에 대한 반동으로 고전주의의 이상으로의 회귀를 추구하는 것을 말한다. 따라서 신고전주의에 선행하는 사조인 고전주의(classiccism)와 낭만 주의를 살펴본 후, 신고전주의의 일반적인 개념과 경향에 대하여 고찰하였다. 또 발란쉰과 스트라빈스키의 작품성향을 파악하기위하여 그들의 전반적인 작품활동을 시기별로 나누어 살펴보고, 그들의 신 고전주의적 발레작품인 <아폴로>(Apollo, 1928)와 <아공>(Agon, 1957)을 분석하였다. 이 두작품을 택한 이유는, 먼저 <Apollo>는 그들의 최초의 공동작업을 통해 만들어진 신 고전주의의 경향의 방향을 결정지워준 작품이기 때문이며, <Agon>은 발레에 있어서 이러한 신고전주의적 경향이 절정에 달한 가장 대표적인 작품이기 때문이다. 그 결과 유추되어진 발레에 있어서 신고전주의 경향을 살펴보면 다음과 같다 첫째, 추상적이다. 둘째, 줄거리나 플롯이 배재되어 있다. 셋째, 의상과 무대장치를 제거하거나 축소하였다. 넷째, 음악의 비중이 확대되었다. 다섯째, 쁘띠빠(Marius Petipa)시대의 고전적 어휘를 기반으로하여 혁신적인 스텝과 동작이 나타난다. 그리고 발레에서의 신고전주의는 단순히 고전발레의 답습이었다기 보다는 고전발레의 전통을 기반으로 하여 새로운 것을 창조하려는 시도였으며, 신체의 순수한 움직임을 강조하고 추구하는 발레의 새로운 방향을 제시하였다. 또한 발레의 고유의 특질을 개발하고 한계점을 극복하기위한 시도로서 현대의 발레에 많은 영향을 끼쳤다.;Beginning with the 20th century, Serge Diaghilev's 「Ballet Ruesses」brought many changes in styles and expressions of ballet. Neo-Classicism is a kind of such changes and has been developed by George Balanchine, the last choreographer of 「Ballet Russes」, on whose creative activities Igor Stravinsky influenced much as musician. They are considered as the representative precursors of Neo-Classicism in each own artistic field. They influenced on each other's artistic activities through frequent interchanges and joint works the contemporary artists. The purpose for this study is examine the tendency of their activities and analyze the ballet works as the fruit of their joint work in order to infer the general trend of neo-classic ballet. Neo-Classicism can be defined as the pursuit of a return to the ideal of Classicism as a reaction from Romanticism. There, first, it examinded Classicism and Romanticism which precedes Neo-Classicism before looking the general and trend of Neo-Classicism. And to grasp the tendency of Balanchine and Stravinsky's works, it classified their whole activites and tendencies by periods analyzed their neo-classic ballet works, <Apollo, 1928> and <Agon, 1957>. It close these two works because <Apollo> decided a direction of their neo-classic tendencies through such a joint work for the first time and <Agon> is the most representative work which reached the climax of such neo-classicism trend. As a result, the following can derive the trend of Neo-classiclsm from those selscted ballet works. First, it is abstract, Second, it is exclusive of a story of s plot, Third, it removes or reduces costume and stage setting, fourth, music was given much weight in it, Fifth, it shows a reformative step and a movement based on the classic terms of Marius Petipa. Such a trend of Neo-classicism tried to create the new based on the treadition of classic ballet instead of simply following it, and suggest a new direction of ballet which emphasizes and pursues a natural movement of a body. In addition, it developed a peculiar quality of ballet and tried to overcome its limits only to influence much on a modern ballet.
