巫佛祭儀를 통해서 본 韓國人의 죽음觀念

Abstract

인류가 지구상에 살기 시작한 이래로 수 많은 종교들이 발흥, 전래되어 왔다. 종교는 인간이 한평생을 보내며 부딪치게 되는 각종 인생문제에 대하여 그들 교리에 따른 해답과 위안을 주어왔으며, 특히 인간이 가장 두려워 하는 죽음의 문제에 대해 일정한 입장과 함께 특정 의례를 갖추게 되었다. 한국에서 고대로부터 대표적인 靈魂薦度儀禮절차로 행해져오던 儀式은 무속의 死靈굿과 불교의 49齋이다. 주지하는 바와 같이, 서로 이질적 종교인 이들이 그들의 천도의례에 있어서는 기능과 구성에서 아주 밀접한 유사성을 띠고 있어 필자로 하여금 서로 영향을 주고 받지 않았을까 하는 의문을 갖도록 했다. 한국인의 원초적 종교심성이라 할 무속은 현실에서 통과의례를 다 거치고 유복하게 살다가 정상적인 죽음을 맞는 것을 가장 큰 목표로 하는 現世中心的인 종교이다. 이에 한해 불교는 금욕과 수행을 통해 해탈하는 것이 최대 과제인 來世中心的인 종교이다. 이렇게 다른 죽음관념을 가진 두 종교가 한국에 들어와서 그 천도의례가 비슷해진 연유는 무엇일까. 필자는 두 종교의 구체적인 비교와 분석을 통해 그들의 유사점과 차이점을 밝혀 보면서 서로가 주고 받은 영향관계에 대하여 고찰해 보기로 하였다. 의례의 정확한 연구를 위하여 필자는 먼저 두 종교가 가지고 있는 죽음에 대한 관념과 영혼관, 사령의 특성 그리고 내세관 등 의례를 치루는데 있어 근본이 되는 관념들을 조사해 보았다. 그리고 두 종교의 천도의례인 사령굿과 49재를 각각 현장조사하였다. 사령굿은 진도의 씻김굿을 대상으로 했고 49재는 서울근교에서 행해지는 시왕각배재를 모델로 했다. 이와같이 연구된 자료들을 바탕으로, 사령굿과 49재의 기능과 구성을 비교해 본 결과 역시 상당히 유사한 점을 발견할 수 있었다. 이 유사점은 두 종교가 오랜 동안 서로 영향을 주고 받으면서 서로가 자신의 단점을 보완하면서 민중 깊숙히 파고들려한 데에 기인했다고 본다. 그들의 영향관계에 대한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 재래풍습 정도로 치부되며 천시받던 무속의 입장에서는 그들의 종교적 위엄을 높이고 일정한 종교로서의 틀과 형식을 갖추는데 불교의 장엄한 의식인 도움이 되었다. 둘째, 외래종교인 불교의 입장에서는 이미 무속의 뿌리가 깊은 한국에 그들의 교리를 전파하는데 있어 무속의 양식을 어느 정도 차용하는 것이 필수적이었다. 셋째, 이 두 종교가 각각 자신들의 교세와 이익을 위해 수용한 천도의례에 있어서의 상호작용은 한국인의 죽음관념이라는 공통된 방향을 지향하면서 발전된 것이었다.;So many religions have been arisen and developed ever since man had lived on earth. They have solved the problems man faced through the life and given consolation to man, especially, each religion came to have unique thought and rituals about death man is extremely afraid of. The typical rituals for the dead man that have performed in Korea for long time are Ssikim-kut in Korean Shamanism and 49Chae in Buddhism. As is generally known, two religions are extraneous in their thought, nevertheless, their rituals have similarities in both side of function and structure, which was doubted if these are in any relationship. Korean Shamanism that is Korean's instinctive religion goals the welfare on this world such as wealthy, lucky, having sons, passing married and normal death not by accient. On the contrary, Buddhism is the religion trying to ready for another world beyond the death by repressing the passions and ascetic practice in this world. And what is the reason that religion which originally have very different thought of death came to have many similarities in only their rituals? By the comparison and analysis in terms of function and structure on rituals in detail, the similarities, differences, interaction between them were investigated. In order to make the rituals examine clearly, first of all, the thought about the death, the immortal soul, the soul's character and the world beyond were observed, as ritual is based on the thought religion have. And the rituals of two religion were observed on the very spot where it was performed. The subjects of observation were Jindo Ssikim-kut of Shamanism and 49Chae as Buddhism. On the result of comparison based on these various research materials, many similarities were showed and they were caused by the interaction to complement their own weakness; and propagate to the local peaple, Korean. By processing this study, this came to the following results. 1. In case of Korean Shamanism regarded as the past folklore, solemn ritual of Buddhism was needed not only in elevating it's social position but also in equipping organization and structure of ritual. 2. It was essential for Buddism, a foreign origined religion, to borrow the familiar formation of Korean Shamanism which influenced Korean way of thinking ,in order to propagate their religion in Korea. 3. Interaction in rituals which both religion accepted in order to propagate themselves developed going toward same direction that was the Korean traditional thought for death.
