Gustav Holst의 Sanskrit 작품에 대한 연구

Abstract

Gustav Holst (1874∼1934)는 영국 태생으로 20세기 초반 영국의 음악 발전에 있어서 가장 중요하고 창조적인 인물 중 한 사람이었다. 그는 위대한 작곡가이자 교육자였으며 또한 훌륭한 인성을 지녔던 사람이었다. 그의 음악은 영국 민속음악과 함께 옛 영국 튜더양식의 음악, 그리고 고대 인도의 Sanskrit문학과 음악에서 영향받았으며 이러한 영향은 그의 음악에서 단순함과 통일성, 서정적이면서도 신비스러운 분위기를 느끼게한다. 한편, 선법적이고 대위법적인 특징과 명확한 음악적 표현, 다양한 리듬과 박자의 사용은 그의 음악을 개성적으로 만들었다. 본 논문에서는 Holst의 Sanskrit 작품인 <Vedic Hymns> Op.24를 중심으로 이 작품에서 나타나는 인도음악의 요소들을 살펴보았다. 이 작품은 Veda 교(敎)의 제사음악에 나오는 Rig-Veda의 가사를 Holst 자신이 직접 번역하여 음악을 붙인 것으로, 3개의 그룹 안에 각각 3곡씩 포함되어 있다. 인도음악의 요소로는 Veda교 제사음악의 음계와 유사한 선법의 사용, 낭창적인 기법, 혼합박자, 순차적인 진행과 함께 4도, 5도의 도약 진행을 주로 사용한 것 등이다. 그밖에 이 작품에서는 이종 음계가 많이 보이며, 한가지 주제를 반복하는 순환적인 형식을 사용하므로써 곡을 통일성 있게 만들었다. <Vedic Hymn>를 통하여 Holst는 Sanskrit문학의 한 철학 사상과 일치하는 자신의 무애착사상을 표현하였으며, 이 작품 전체에서 느껴지는 신비주의는 그의 다른 작품들 속에서도 중요한 특징이 되었다.;Gustav Holst (1874- 1934), born in England, was a creative character who played one of the most important roles in the development of English music in the earlier twentieth century. He was a great composer and teacher and a great-hearted man at the same time. Since his music was affected by English folk music and English music of the Tudor period, and ancient Hindu Sanskrit literature and music, these influences flavor his music with simplicity and unity in addition to a lyrical and mysterious mood. On the other hand, he showed his strong individuality by use of modal and contrapuntal characteristics, and clarity of musical expression with various rhythms and meters. In this thesis the Sanskrit work (Vedic Hymns) Op.24 which Holst composed, and which represents factors of Hindu music, was surveyed. Holst himself translated Rig-Veda' s words for this musical setting. This setting is divided into three groups of three songs each. He used a mode similar to the scale of Vedic music, declamatory style, compound meters, and combined mainly the disjunct progression of the 4th and 5th with conjunct progression. By use of bitonality and cyclic format that reiterates one subject, his work became unified. Through the (Vedic Hymns), Holst tried to express his own idealism consistent with the philosophical trend of Sanskrit literature. The mysticism represented throughout this work became a significant characteristic of his other works. also.
