James M. Lee의 종교교수이론 연구

Abstract

This thesis is attempted to introduce James M. Lee's Religious Instruction theory as asocial-science approach which suggests a new possibility for the problems of the present religious education and to apply it to the Korean church kindergarten education. The church of Korea has accomplished quantitative growth, and at the same time the church needs qualitative growth to match the quantitative growth. That is to say, scientific teaching method and improvement of professionality among the religious instructors are required. Lee's Religious Instruction as a social-science approach will be able to meet such needs. Religious Instruction is a kind of the intentional process of education by and through which desired religious learning outcomes are actually facilitated in some way. Religious Instruction, teaching religion, is focused on the teaching-learning dimension. Lee maintains that religious education has played a messenger boy for theology or translator of theology for a long time. Lee indicates that it is an invalid approach with the character and work of the religious education, the theological approach. Thus he asserts that Religious Instruction is a mode of social science rather than a form of theology. At last, Lee constructs fundamental theoretical framework on the basis of social-science approach. Lee develops the concrete praxiological theory of how the aim, content, method, and curriculum of teaching religion can be applied. Nevertheless, his theory seems to be unable to overcome the limitations ; his scientific macrotheory has contributed to the aspect of professionality but the emphasis should rather be easy to overlook the spirituality, another aspect of religious education. When the only professionality Lee emphasizes is integrated to the unique dimension of religious education, the spirituality, the authentic religious education may well be accomplished. In this thesis, I have tried to examine the possibility of applying his theory to the kindergarten education of Korean church. At that point, the church kindergarten education is changed from the viewpoint of children, teacher, learning method, dichotomy on content- method.;본 논문은 현대 종교교육의 문제점에 대해 하나의 새로운 가능성을 제시한 James M. Lee의 종교교수이론을 소개하고, 이를 한국교회 유치부교육에 적용해 보고자 시도되었다. 한국교회는 양적인 급성장에 직면하여 교회교육의 시급한 과제인 교수법의 과학화와 교사의 전문성개발의 필요성을 갖게 된다. 이의 달성을 위해서는 James M. Lee의 종교교수이론이 상당한 시사점을 제시해준다고 본다. 1970년대 초 새로운 시각을 가지고 부상한 Lee는 '종교교수' (Religious Instruction)라는 독특한 명칭을 사용한다. 또한 이제까지 지배적이어왔던 종교교육의 신학적접근을 비판하며, 새로운 사회과학적 접근의 방향을 제시하였다. 즉, 기존의 종교교육은 대개 실천신학에 예속된 한 분야로 간주되어, 종교교육이 단순히 신학의 메세지를 전달하는 심부름꾼이나, 신학적내용을 알기 쉽게 번역해 주는 정도의 역할만을 해 온 것이 사실이다. 이에 Lee는 "종교교수란, 신학에 예속된 한 분야라기보다는 오히려 사회과학의 한 양태(a mode)이다"라는 전제하에서 1차적인 이론적 구조틀을 형성하고. 그러한 이론적 설정에 따라 실제적인 교수방법과 과정을 연결시키는 구체적인 실제이론(Proxiological theory)을 정립하였다. 이와 같은 Lee의 이론은 기존 신학적접근의 지배하에 있는 현재의 종교교육의 비효과적이고, 비과학적인, 비전문성의 문제를 극복할 하나의 가능성을 제시했다고 볼 수 있으며, 특히 그의 이론을 교회교육의 시작이라고 할 수 있는 유치부교육에 적용해볼 만한 가능성을 모색함으로써, 새로운 교육의 방향을 제시하는데 의미를 준다고 볼 수 있다.
