Abstract
In journalism, it has been the principal matter of discussion that the reality constructed by means of mass media influences receivers on the perception of reality. Besides, the reality constructed by the press is crucially important in that the press plays a decisive role to supervise the environments: to face up the reality of society, to point out the problems and to criticize them. Such storeis as this is called 'bad news' since it reports the social events and problems in general and simultaneously performs a critical function. Therefore, bad news refers to the reports dealing with primarily negative factors such as trouble and disagreement in society, while investigating and criticizing social problems. Although bad news represents the intrinsic nature of the press, problems have been raised on the uncontrolled increase of bad news in quantity and on the distortion of reality. This study, on the theoretical background, was focused on the relationship between bad news and the press, the routine and the environments of the press. The trends of bad news and relevant problems in the press in Korea were examined by mans of content analysis. With those concerns the brief results are as follows: First, news stories on the whole contained much more bad news than good or neutral news. The frequency of bad news was highest with the stories of social subject whereas lowest with the stories of cultural metters. Second, higher value was usually placed on bad news rather than on good or neutral news in the production of the news. With regard to the size of headlines, bad news had bigger headlines than those of good or neutral news. However, no significant difference was found in the nature of news as to the position within a page. On the contrary, neutral news was more frequently positioned on the front page than bad news in the page layout. Third, news information came mainly from bureaucratic news source - such as the Government, the police, the prosecution and the court of justice - rather than from the source of the common social organization. In case of channels, journalists depended more on routine channels than informal channels. In the social status of news sources, those from the powerful class had much higher frequency than the source from the non-powerful or middle class. Fourth, no significant difference was found in selecting bad news between the Dong-A Ilbo and the Chosun Ilbo in consideration of news topics. But in the way of organization of bad news, the Dong-A Ilbo used more of straight, depth and interpretive or enterprise and precision stories than the Chosun Ilbo. On the other hands, feature and investigative stories were more favored in the Chosun Ilbo. Fifth, the significant difference was shown in the news dimension in accordance with the change in the press circumstances. The shift from a controlling to alleviating press system caused a change in the news dimension: while good or neutral news has been diminished, bad news increased. And yet there appeared no difference in news topics or the use of the news source.
