Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of four English concessive connectives in discourse. Occurrences of the concessive connectives 'although', 'though', 'nevertheless' and 'despite' were gathered from four genres: fiction, journal, humanities and social science textbooks, and science textbooks. These data were analyzed in terms of distribution of given and new information, sentential position, and topical contnuity. The results of this study are as follows. First, there was an overall tendency to use 'although', 'though' and 'nevertheless' in order to encode new information, and to use 'despite' in order to encode given information. This tendency suggests that information type has a rotation with use of syntactic structures. New information generally requires greater detail and elaboration and so is handled in the expansive, more salient clauses 'although', 'though', and 'nevertheless'. On the other hand, given information does not require this detailed elaboration and is handled in the compact, less salient clause or phrase such as 'despite' phrase. Second, when the connectives are used to encode new information, they tend to be positioned in final position in sentence. When the connectives are used to encode given information, they tend to be positioned in initial position in sentence. Thirdly, concessive sequences were influenced by topical continuity. The case that the topic of the consequent (the main clause) was coreferential with the next topic or the prior topic occurred more frequently than the topic of the concessive (the subordinate clause) was coreferential with the next topic or the prior topic. This shows that when a preposition is in a subordinate postion, it has a subordinate role. From these results, we can conclude that the use of concessive connectives in discourse is governed by pragmatic constraints such as information structure for effective communication. This study suggests that English teachers should teach students to use concessive connectives appropriately in discourse and develop materials in the direction of focusing on language use. Further studies should be conducted to obtain information about the use of other gammatical expressions in discourse: ESL/EFL students' use of grammatical expressions including the connectives analyzed in the present study should be investigated in order to understand better their use of the expressions in context.;본 연구의 목적은 양보관계를 나타내는 영어 연결사인 'although', 'though', 'nevertheless', 'despite'가 담화에서 어떻게 사용되는지를 알아보는 데 있다.
