물의 이미지를 통한 삶의 은유적 표현

Abstract

우리는 생활 주변에 너무나 일상적인 모습으로 존재하는 물에 대해 무심히 지나치거나 하찮게 생각하는 경향이 있다. 그러나 그러한 물은 예로부터 많은 사상가와 예술가의 은유적 모델로서 생명력을 갖고 있는 존재로 인식되었고, 물이 가지는 모든 다양한 속성을 근거로 하여 물이 갖는 특성과 의미를 부여해 왔다. 그러한 일반적인 소재인 물이 본인에게는 특별한 소재로 다가왔으며, 물을 통하여 인간의 삶을 생각하게 되었고, 물에서 연유되는 물질적 상상력을 통해 색채를 달리하고 형태를 주관적으로 표현함으로써 감정적인 내적 가치를 부여하여 보는 이로 하여금 물에 대한 일반적인 시각의 변화를 인지하게 하였다. 본인은 급류에 휘말려 죽음의 문턱까지 갔었던 사건이 있었다. 그러한 기억은 두려움으로 남아 있지만 물에 대한 동경은 또 다른 이상의 세계로 남겨져 있기도 하다. 그때 물에 대한 경험을 기억 이미지로 하여 가스통 바슐라르(Caston Bachelard: 1884∼1962)의 물질적 상상력 이론과 접목시켜 본인이 느꼈던 삶에 대한 작업을 해석, 설명하고자 한다. 우리는 물 없이는 존재할 수 없을 것이며, 이는 곧 물이 모든 생명체의 근원이고 필수 불가결한 존재임을 알 수 있다. 그러한 물에서 느낄 수 있는 다양한 이미지를 삶과 연결시켜 작업으로 풀어나가고자 한다. 먼저, 예술 행위에 있어 자라나는 내면적 사고의 근원으로서 물에 대한 기억 이미지에 대해 알아보았으며, 바슐라르의 물에 대한 물질적 상상력 이론에 대해서도 살펴보았다. 또한 물에 투영된 삶의 상징적 표현으로 다양한 분야의 예를 들어 보았다. 또한 본인의 작품에서 표현된 방법적 측면에 대해 고찰해 보았다. 물에서 느낄 수 있었던 두려움, 공포, 죽음의 이미지를 갇힌 공간의 표현과 퍼짐의 기법으로 풀어나갔으며, 색채는 삶의 이미지와 연결시켜 상징적으로 표현하였다. 퍼짐의 기법에서는 대기와 빛을 표현한 터너와 본인의 작품을 연결시켜 살펴보았으며, 터너의 대기와 빛의 표현이 본인의 작업과 비교함에 있어 유사점과 차이점이 있음을 알 수 있었다. 터너는 영국 낭만주의 대표화가로서 생(生)과 사(死)를 넘나드는 드라마틱한 주제를 채택하고 그러한 이미지를 역동적으로 부각시키기 위해 대기와 빛을 사용하여 자연의 숭고함을 드러내고 있었다. 본인 또한 폭넓은 자연은 주제가 아니지만 물에서 느낄 수 있었던 경외심과 숭고미를 표현하고, 또 물 속의 공간감을 표현하고자 대기를 이용하며 색채를 상징적으로 사용한다는 점에서 유사점이 있었다. 색채의 의미에서는 모네(Claude Monet: 1840∼1926), 터너 (J. M. William Turner: 1775∼1851), 로드코(Mark Rothko: 1903∼1970)의 작품과 비교하여 본인의 작품과 어떠한 차이가 있는지 살펴보았다. 색채를 사용함에 있어 상징적 의미로 작업에 표현하며 숭고함과 경건함, 조용함을 느낄 수 있는 서정적인 색감과 명상을 유도하는 색을 사용함을 알 수 있었다. 이로써 본인의 작품에 나타나는 기법적인 측면에 대해서 관련 있을 만한 작가의 작품과 비교, 분석해 보았다. 결과적으로 이러한 작가들과 현대에 살고 있는 본인과 현저히 구분될 만한 독특한 기법적 차이가 없다는 점이 아쉬움으로 남으며, 앞으로의 당면 과제로 남겨져 있다.;While we are tend to having little attention to water commonly existing around our life and ignoring its importance, for a long time artists and philosophers have been considered water the metaphorical existence of vitality. Based on all the diverse properties of water, they characterized it and gave it specialty and meaning. In spite of common existence, water and particularly relation between water and life & death came to me a special subject matter, which made me think deeply about human's life & death through water. Therefore I intended to give emotional intrinsic value to water and make people to recognize the change of general viewpoint about water by changing colors and subjectively expressing forms with material imaginational motif inspired from water. Once I happened to drift to rapid stream and go near to death. That memory still remains as a fear about water but cannot prevent me from yearning water, another ideal world. Based on that memory, I applied material imaginational theory of Gaston Bachelard to image of my work about water on life & death. Water is essential element that we cannot survive without it and the origin of every organism on earth. I intended to link life with diverse images of water. First, I found the memorial images of water as the origin of internally growing thought and tried to understand the material imaginational theory of Gaston Bachelard. I also gave some kind of examples of symbolic expression of life reflected on water. I tried to express the images of fear, horror and death feeling from water with a closed space and spreading technique similar to sfumato method. I also tried to express the colors symbolically to link them with image of water. In spreading technique, I compared my work with works of Turner used light and air and found out the similarity and dissimilarity between them. J. M William Turner, a representative painter of British romanticism, chose the dramatic concept of life and death as his life time theme. To express the sublimity of Nature, he used air and light and gave silence to those images. Though my theme is not wide expanse of nature, there are some similarities in expressing the admiration and sublimity of water and using the colors of air to express space. In the meaning of colors, I compared my works with works of Monet, Turner and Rothko to find out the similarity. They applied the lyrical colors can feeling the silence, devotion and sublimity and inducing the meditation. With this, I investigated the technical aspect of my work by comparing with other relevant painters. In the event, I had some unsatisfied feeling that there is little chance to find out the difference between my works and other relevant painters in technical aspect. I intended to develop my work to figure out present issue.
