기억의 상징성에 관한 조형적 연구

Abstract

본 인간의 기억과 경험이 상징적 표현에 의해 시각화 되는 과정을 고찰한 글이다. 작가에게 있어 기억이란 총체적 경험의 내용으로서 작품의 동기를 제공한다. 인간은 여러 감각을 통해 외부세계를 받아들이게 되고 이러한 감각들은 여러 단계들을 거쳐 저장되고 표현되는 기억 과정을 경험한다. 기억에 대한 관념은 예술가가 속한 시간과 공간 속에서 형성되고, 과거를 판단하고 현재를 결정지을 수 있게 하며, 미래에 대한 계획을 세울 수 있게 한다. 또한 기억은 현재의 자아를 형성하는 데에 영향을 미치며, 사회 구성원 전반에 공유된 기억들로 인하여 소통의 매개물로 기능한다. 즉, 한 개인의 무의식속에 내재하는 기억의 편린들은 심리적 고착 과정을 통해 특별한 의미를 부여받게 되고, 나아가 작품으로 승화된다. 이렇듯 예술작품의 배경은 작가의 경험과 기억을 근간으로 하여 그 환경에서 얻어지는 소재들을 통해 구체적, 형상적, 또는 상징적 의미의 창조로 발전하며, 직관적으로는 보는 이의 감각과 상상력의 연상 작용이나 심리적 효과를 불러일으키는 중요한 요소가 된다. 따라서 이러한 경험이나 기억의 특성을 시각화하기 위해 본인은 작품에 상징적 표현을 도입하고 있다. 상징은 표면적으로 드러난 의미를 넘어서 또 다른 의미들을 내포하고 있다는 점에서 기억이나 경험이 가진 불분명한 성격을 적절하게 표현할 수 있는 방법이다. 즉, 상징은 의미를 포괄적으로 전달하는 한편, 고것을 직접적으로 제시하지 않고 우회적인 방식으로 드러낸다. 한편 본인이 기억이나 경험을 상징화하는 과정에서 보여지는 부호들은 부호의 일반적 의미만이 아닌 선택적 상황에서 인간의 내부의식을 외부로 표현하여 내적세계와 외적세계를 연결 시켜주는 매개물로써 내면적 의식 표출이라는 상징성을 담고 있는 것이다. 따라서 본인이 작품에서 표현하고 있는 부호는 주변에서 볼 수 있는 정형화된 모습에서 벗어나 본인의 기억이나 경험을 표현하는 소통으로서의 기호로 심화(深化)되고 있다. 또한 작품의 조형 요소를 이루는 부호들의 표현에 있어서, 그것이 배치되고 지워지는 과정 속에 드러나는 상징적 공간들은 작가가 화면 안의 공간과 화면 밖의 공간 사이에 감정적 인식의 공유를 이루어내고자 했음을 보여주었다. 위와 같이 작품 안에 나타나는 부호들이 그것의 상징적 의미 작용을 통해, 작품 안에 표현되어지는 작가의 내면세계와 어떻게 조응해 나가는지에 관하여 살펴보고, 감정의 객관화 과정에 있어서 획득되어지는 상징적 이미지의 표현을 살펴봄으로써 예술의 소통적 면모를 보여주는 계기로 삼고자 하였다.;This thesis studies how the human memory and experience are symbolized through signs. Artists find motives for art from their memory, the overall experience. Human beings experience the outside world through various senses. This is stored and expressed through several stages and thereby forms one's memory. The concept of memory is formed within the time and space, in which the artist lives. It is used to judge the past, decide the present and plan for the future. Furthermore, memory influences the formation of one's identity and the memories shared by the whole community functions a s the communication facilitator. The small parts of memory existing in the unconsciousness of individuals get special meaning attached to it with psychological fixation process the and are transformed into art. The experience and memory of the artist, which serves as the basis of the work of art, is developed and created into a specific, formative and symbolic meanings using materials acquired from the surrounding environment and thereby makes the viewer intuitionally associated with it through his/her own senses and imagination o r brings about psychological effects on the viewer. In order to visualize the characteristics of such experiences and memories, I have used signs for symbolization in my work. Symbolization is a good way to express the uncertain characteristics of one's experience and memory because it shows other meanings implied under the surface. In other words, symbols deliver the meanings in a more comprehensive way and an indirect way. On the other hand, signs that appear during the symbolization process of human memory or experience show not only their original meaning but also a symbolic meaning in some certain situations a s the artist's consciousness is expressed to the outside world. The signs connect the outside world and the world inside the artist. Therefore, the signs that are in my work has a deeper meaning that communicates my memory or experience rather than their fixed meaning that are usually used. Furthermore, with the symbolicspace that is created by the arrangement and disappearance of signs, the formative elements of my work, shows the effort of the author to bring about a shared emotion and recognition between the space inside the screen and outside the screen. As I mentioned above, I would like to study how the signs in my work corresponds with the inside world of the artist through symbolization and look at the expression of symbolic meanings acquired in the process of objectifying emotions. And thereby demonstrate the way art facilitates communication.
