Abstract
Since the English language and the Korean language do not belong to the same language family, the difference of the sound patterns between the two languages may cause a difficulty in learning English as a second language for Korean students. It is true that Korean students experience difficulties and make errors for comprehending and producing suprasegmental phonemes of English such as stress, pitch levels, and junctures. This study is intended to develop an effective teaching method, and materials for suprasegmental phonemes, using the contrastive analysis of suprasegmental phonemes of English and Korean, and predict difficulties of the troublesome spots. In the procedures of this study, a contrastive analysis hypothesis is used as a theoretical background, then books and papers related in suprasegmental phonemes are examined for the description of suprasegmental phonemes of English and Korean. The process is as follows: (1) Description of suprasegmentals of Korean (2) Description of suprasegmentals of English (3) Comparison and Contrast of suprasegmentals (4) Predicting difficulties out of the differences and proposing effective teaching materials for these items. The ultimate goal of contrastive analysis is predicting difficulties and minimizing errors in learning a foreign language. Through this study, I conclude with some points for teaching and learning suprasegmental phonemes as follows. First, since the stress pattern of English is rather complex than that of Korean and plays an important role in differentiating the meaning, this contrast may cause the difficulty in learning English. Korean does not employ the secondary and tertiary stress of English. In addition, the shifting stress pattern is new to Korean students, thus a lot of drills are needed. Secondly, since Korean is a language of syllable-timed rhythm while English is a language of stress- timed rhythm, for Korean students stress- timed rhythm may be stubstituted for syllable- timed rhythm. They feel great difficulty in listening to and speaking the English rhythm. Therefore, the rhythm of English becomes an important item in learning spoken English. Thirdly, the pitch levels and terminal junctures consist of an intonation contour. The intonation contour of the declarative sentense is /221#/ in Korean and /231#/ in English. The intomation contour of English is peculiar, in contrast to Korean, expecially in WH-question, altenative question, and tag question. Thus, Korean students must do much practice in English speaking in terms of intonation. Fourthly, internal open juncture is phonemic in both languages. But in English this brings phonetic change and becomes a cue for presence of it. The duration is not phonemic in English but phonemic in Korean. The duration of English accompanies sound changes and is subjected to the phonetic environments.
