국민학교 영어지도를 위한 소고

Abstract

Teaching a foreign language in elementary schools is a worldwide tendency. Since 1982, the Ministry of Education began to emphasize the importance of English education at the elementary level in Korea. The purpose of this paper is to find the merits of FLES(Foreign Languages in Elementary School). I wanted to state the positive effects of FLES based on elementary students' physical, intellectual and emotional development. An effort was made to recognize the appropriate materials and methods which fit the elementary program. I attempted to discover the impacts and effects produced by English education including songs and games. In order to study the effects of English education, a questionnaire was made The results are as follows : 1. Students enjoy studying English by singing and playing game. 2. Students prefer practicing English songs and games with their sisters and brothers rather than with their parents. 3. Students find words of the songs difficult when they learn English songs. 4. They like to learn songs directly from their teacher rather than learning through the use of video tapes or casette tapes. 5. Students want to spend half of the class hour in learning English through songs, and games. 6. Students can retain more effectively and for longer periods of time what they learned through songs and games. 7. Students feel a need for an English text.;국민학교에서의 조기영어교육은 세계적으로 보편화되고 있는 추세이며 1982년부터 우리나라에서도 영어교육이 실시되기 시작하여 점점 관심의 대상이 되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 국민학교에서의 영어교육의 필요성을 조기 외국어교육의 찬성론을 중심으로 살펴본 후 아동기의 특성과 관련시켜 조기영어학습의 잇점을 생각해 보았다. 아동기는 새로운 지식을 잘 받아들이며 기억력이 현저히 발달하는 시기이며 언어발달에서도 8세가 되면 모국어를 유창하게 하고 정서적으로는 정서의 경과시간이 짧고 강하다. 그리고 호기심이 강하고 친구사이를 중하게 여기는 시기다. 또한 아동들에게 맞는 교재와 교수법에 대하여 알아보았다. 아동들에게 맞는 교재는 아동기의 특성을 충분히 고려해야 하고 언어학 및 심리학적인 면에 바탕을 두고 전개해 나가야 하며 목표어국의 문화에 접할 수 있는 내용이 되어야 한다. 좋은 모델이 될 수 있는 교사를 통해 정확하게 영어를 듣고, 말할 수 있도록 하고 연습도 집중적으로 짧은 시간 동안이라도 자주하는 것이 좋다. 묻고 답하기 방법, 문형연습등은 가장 많이 쓰이는 교수법이며 노래와 게임을 이용한 교수법은 아동들에게 특히 적합한 지도방법으로 사용될 수 있다. 노래와 게임은 즐거운 분위기와 흥미를 지속시키는데 도움이 된다. 노래와 게임을 지도할 때는 그들의 지적 흥미와 교실 환경에 알맞는 것을 택해야 하며 교사는 공부시간의 분위기가 너무 흐뜨러 지지 않는 범위에서 노래와 게임을 도입하여 수업하는 것이 좋다. H사립국민학교에서 4, 5, 6학년 각 두학급씩을 대상으로 14개의 설문법에 의해서 조사한 결과 과반수 이상의 학생들이 노래와 게임을 이용한 영어수업이 가장 즐겁고 지루하지 않다고 말하고 있다. 이같은 사실은 노래와 게임을 국민학교 수준에서 보다 적절하게 영어학습지도에서 활용할 필요성을 뒷받침 해주고 있다고 하겠다. 「영어수업지도서」(주석1)에 나타난 교재와 교수법을 검토하면서 교재편성에 대한 몇가지 문제점과 개선방안을 제시해 보았고 각 교재에 맞는 구체적인 지도 방법도 예시해 보았다. 특히 노래와 게임을 이용한 지도방법을 교재와 연결시켜 제시함으로써 실제 학습지도에 도움을 주고자 하였다.
