Benjamin Britten의 연가곡 " A birthday hansel" op.92에 대한 연구

Abstract

Benjamn Britten (1913-1976)은 20세기의 초, 중반에 활동한 Purcell이후의 영국의 대표적 작곡가의 한 사람으로 꼽히고있다. 그는 교향악, 실내악을 포함하여 모든 장르에 명작을 남기고 있으나 110여곡에 달하는 그의 전 작품중 약 80여곡이 성악작품이라는 사실로 알 수 있듯이 본성적으로 인성(人聲)에 깊은 공감을 느껴온 음악가였다. 때문에 그의 기악음악도 그 형식감이 때때로 성악적 구조의식에 의해 뒷받침되며 또 성악적 분위기를 느끼게 한다. 그의 작품은 절충적인 것이어서 고전적인 절제감과 Purcell의 영향에 의한 바로크풍, 또 복조, 다조성의 응용까지도 포함하는 참신한 음악어법을 개발해내고 있다. 그리고 그만의 독특한 감각에 의해 효과적인 시와 음악의 결합을 창출해내어 오랫동안 침체경향에 있던 영국의 성악작품에 새로운 기풍을 불어넣은 작곡가였다. 본 논문에서는 그의 말기 작품중의 하나인<A Birthday Hansel>Op. 92를 중심으로 이 작품이 나타난 그의 성악음악 양식의 특징을 살펴보았다. 18세기 스코트랜드의 국민시인 Robert Burns의 일곱 개의 시에 곡을 붙인 이 곡에서 그는 민속노래의 성격을 다른 어느곡에서 보다 더 풍부히 나타내고 있는데 기본악구를 반복해서 이뤄지는 선율과 민속노래를 닮은 리듬과 선율을 사용한 것, 5음음계의 사용등이 그것이다. 또한 낭창적인 선율, Ground Bass 등의 Purcell의 영향도 보이며 선율에 시의 내용을 묘사하고 있다. 화성에 있어서는 2도, 4도, 7도 축적의 비3도 구성화음과, 주요 장, 단 3화음이 함께 사용되어 복조, 다조등의 성격을 띠우고 있다. 조성이 느껴지는 부분에서도 대부분 완전한 화음구조를 피하고 조성을 깨뜨리는 음이 나오므로써 조성감을 흐리게 하고있다. 짜임새를 발전시키는데 있어서 모방진행, 역진행의 방법을 사용함을 볼 수 있으며 성부와 반주부가 서로 그 흐름에 영향을 주고있다. 이와같이 Britten은 이 작품에서 전통적 유럽음악의 주된 흐름위에 스코트랜드의 민속 음악적인 특징을 결합시켜 사용하므로써 그의 다른 연가곡과 구별되는 특색있는 작품을 만들어 내었다.;Benjamia Britten(1913-1976) is one of the great composers of England who was active in music during the early and middle period of the 20th century. He produced many master pieces in every genre of music, but the large part of his output is consist of opera, and other vocal and choral works. For he was in sympathy with vocal music by nature, sometimes one has the feeling that his instrumental music aspires to the condition of vocal or choral music. He invented a new musical idea charaterized by Classical moderation, Baroque style influenced by purcell, and even the bitonality, polytonality. He was so sensitive to the relationship of words and music that he developed how to combine the two disparate element most efficiently. His contribution to the English vocal music society is that to the development of it in 20th century. This thesis has as its aim to research the characteristic of his vocal music which is manifested in his last song cycle, "A Birthday Hansel" op. 92 settings of Robert Burns who is called as 'The Poet of Nation' of Scottland. As a result, it is found that Britten was far more open to suggestion from native musical idioms in these songs than any other works, for example, melody made up by repeating a basic motive or phrase, rhythmic and melodic characteristics which is similar to that of folk tune, and the pentatonic scale. He was influenced by Purcell in reference to declamatory style, florid melody and ground bass. The melody of his songs reflect the accent and meaning of the poem. In harmonics, his favourite nonturtion harmonies are based on the intervals of 2th, 4th, 7th, and his vocal music tend to include polytonality and bitonality. Even in the tonal section he avoided the complet harmonic structure very often. In his last songs, Britten combined the Scottish music with the mainstream of the cultivated European tradition most effectively, so that he created the distinctive cycle song form others.
