Victor Herbert의 operetta "The Fortune Teller" 에 관한 소고

Abstract

Victor Herbert is a composer whose works are largely unknown to us. It is unquestionably true that little work has been performed under the name of "operetta" and that no reference information is available in Korea. Given the current situation, the purpose of my paper is to introduce him and his operetta, "The Fortune Teller" which is so important in American operetta. Followed by my account of his life as a composer in chapter Ⅱ, Ⅰ included introductory remarks in chapter Ⅰ. In chapter Ⅱ, Ⅰ attempted to examine a variety of names of operates and to assess his musical standing in American operetta. Finally in chapter Ⅳ, Ⅰ tried to analyze "The Fortune Teller" and describe its theme. In order to analyze it, I explored general form, tonality, and tempo. Other elements studied in my analysis include melody, rhythm, and harmony. A careful survey of my analysis indicate that "The Fortune Teller" consisted of a total of eighteen songs exclusive of its overture. My analysis also demonstrate that many of these songs partially imitated or adopted some rhythms and melodies of the overture. On the whole, the most impressive aspect of its melody is the predominant use of chromatic scale. Some of the harmonies involved include the third, the seventh, and the ninth chord. It is interesting to note that borrowed chord was infrequently used. Given the content of his operetta, it is no wonder that it is well matched with dance music.;Victor Herbert(1859∼1924)는 우리에게 잘 알려지지 않은 작곡자이다. 또한 "operetta"라는 이름 하에 공연되는 작품도 우리나라에서는 거의 없고, 자료도 없는 실정이다. 이와 같은 상황에서 본 논문을 쓰게 된 가장 큰 목적은 미국의 operetta에 있어서 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는 Victor Herbert와 그의 operetta인 "The Fortune Teller"(점장이, 1898)를 소개하는데 있다. Ⅰ장에서의 서론에 이어, Ⅱ장에서는 Herbert의 생애를 소개하고 Ⅲ장에서는 "operetta"의 명칭과 미국 operetta에 있어서의 Herbert의 위치를 살펴본다. 그리고 Ⅳ장에서는 "The Fortune Teller"의 전체 줄거리를 소개하고 곡을 분석한다. 곡 분석에 있어서는 곡의 전체적인 형식과 조성, 빠르기 등을 알아보고 특징적인 선율, 리듬, 화성을 알아본다. 분석 결과를 보면 이 작품은 서곡(overture)을 빼고 전제 18곡으로 되어있는데 이 중의 많은 곡들에서 서곡의 리듬이나 선율이 부분적으로 모방되거나 변형된 형태로 많이 나타나고 있는 것을 알 수 있다. 선율은 전체적으로 반음계가 많이 사용되고 있는 것이 특징적이며 화성은 3화음, 7화음, 9화음 등이 쓰였고, 많이 나타나지는 않으나 차용 화음(borrowed chord)도 보인다. 그리고 작품의 내용과 걸맞게 춤곡으로 쓰인 곡이 많다.
