Abstract
Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) was a representative Italian composer and harpsichordist in the late Baroque and Pre-classical period. Most of his sonatas are in binary form of one movement. The majority of these sonatas are grouped in pairs or triplets. The piece of each group are in the same tonality. Scarlatti's sonata for flute L.179 is composed of 3 harpsichord sonatas, L.179(K.152), L.187(K.481), L.232(K.124), arranged by Ary Van Leeuwen. Thus , this sonata for flute has an introduction and three movements. This thesis compared the flute sonata with the harpsichord sonatas in terms of structural aspects and analyzed the flute sonata in detail. Structurally, the flute sonata has an introduction and is in a simple ternary form in the second movement but other two movements have the same structure. Detailed analysis of the flute sonata shows the following results. First, Scarlatti works with short motives (1 or 2 measures in length) and repeats or varied the motives. Second, The melodies show both stepwise motion and skips and many ornaments and appogiaturas. Third, Dotted rhythm, syncopated rhythm, triplets are widely used. Fourth, Tonally, tonic-dominant key scheme is most frequently used. Fifth, Triads and their inversions and some 7th chords are the basic harmonic idioms used in piece.
