Abstract
This paper is an appraisal of existing error studies. Foreign language learning is a process that is clearly not unlike the native language acquisition in its trial-and-error nature. The learner is consciously testing hypotheses about the target language, creatively acting upon his linguistic environment. Inevitably the learner makes errors in the process of acquisition and will even impede that process if he dose not commit errors and then benefit in turn from various forms of feedback on those errors. A learner' errors are significant in that they provide to the teacher evidence of how language is learned or acquired, what strategies or procedures the learner is employing in the discovery of the language. Three theories emcompassing the field of foreign language learning over the past four decades are Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis, Error Analysis Hypothesis, and Interlanguage Hypothesis. Each of these approaches is an attempt to deal with evidence provided by the language learnder's performance that might tell us about the nature of the learning process and help us later the teaching techniques we provide to improve this performance. Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis claims that many of the errors made by learners are caused by the difference between the native and target languages and that a scientific, structural analysis of the two languages in question will yield a taxonomy of linguistic contrasts, which will enable the researcher to predict the difficulties the learner will encounter. It leads to a large number of extremely valuable language descriptions and pedagogical grammars. Error Analysis Hypothesis shows how systematic errors are interpretable as giving evidence of the learning process and so brings research in foreign language acquisition into theoretical connection with work in first language acquisition. Interlanguage Hypothesis makes even clearer the similarity to first language acquisition studies by focussing attention on the learner's knowledge of the target language as a whole, and provides room, through the notion of fassilization, for an ultimate connection with various sociolinguistic studies of language variation. Each of these approaches has a different emphasis: Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis is most concerned with language description, Error Analysis hypothesis with language acquisition and learning, and Interlanguage Hypothesis with communicative competence. While these theoretical notions alone are unable to solve all the problems of language teaching, each contributes to our understanding of the natrue of the language acquisition process.
