섬유예술의 역사적 고찰

Abstract

The most artists have endless desire to rare and uncommon mode and have made every endeavour to create something novel regardless of the time. So they have represented their inner mentality by the peculiar method of the expression undergoing various changes according as the trends of the times. In all methods of the expression, fabric art have developed in close relation to the human culture as studying that of fabric art in historical developing process of the modern art. We found that it was formed to purse inevitably the beauty getting out of the norm of the past owing to development of the civilization and the expansion of the plastic sense. The Industrial Revolution started in the mid-eighteen century resulted in quantitive abundance but it caused qualitative lowing. So as to counterbalance that, William Morris Art and Craft Movement fins spread out. On the basis of the idea, many design, movements sprang up. Of those, Bauhaus was born to combine and harmonize the art with the technique. From at Bauhaus, the fiber was acknowledged as a material of the art and the foundation of the fabric art aiming to the pure plastic started to be raised. After that, in 1933, Bauhaus was closed. Weavers educated in Bauhaus were spread in many countries and they had an influence on the following generation. Gradually, the activities of fabric artist were matured. Nowadays modern fabric art is developing outstanding activities magnificantly and establishing unique position in art sphere. Meanwhile, many European countries including America show and interchange their works manufactured in new ways through the international display. The materials of the wort become manifold more and more. The range of the expression is extending to three dimensional spate formation as well as plane technique such as embroidery, macrame, knitting, crochet and coiling. The thesis is study the developing preseres of fabric art.;끊임없이 새로운 것을 창조하려는 예술가들은 각 시대의 흐름에 따라 독특한 표현양식으로 자신들의 내면 세계를 표현하고 있다. 그 중에서 인간 문화와 밀접한 관계를 지니고 발전하여온 섬유예술은 문명의 발전과 새로운 조형의식의 확대로 인하여 과거의 모든 규범에서 벗어나 미를 추구하는 예술로서 형성되는 필연적인 과정을 현대미술의 역사적 전개속에 살펴 볼 수 있게 한다. 18세기 중엽부터 시작된 산업혁명으로 양적인 풍요는 가져왔으나 질적인 저하를 가져오게 됨으로서 William Morris는 Art and Craft Movement를 전개하였고 이러한 사상을 기반으로 하여 여러 디자인 운동이 일어났으며 예술과 기술의 통합을 이념으로 한 Bauhaus가 탄생 되었다. 이 Bauhaus시대부터 섬유가 예술의 한 재료로서 인정 받기 시작하였으며 섬유예술이 순수 조형을 지향한 기반을 마련하게 되었다. 그후 1933년 Bauhaus가 폐쇄되면서 그곳에서 교육받은 직조가들은 여러나라에 흩어짐에 따라 그들은 지도자적 위치에서 다음 세대들에게 많은 영향을 주었으며 섬유예술가들의 활동이 서서히 무르익기 시작 하였다. 오늘날에 이르러 괄목하리 만큼 두드러진 활동을 전개하고 있는 현대 섬유예술은 독자적인 위치를 구축하고 있다. 미국을 위시하여 유럽의 여러나라 작가들은 국제적인 전시 활동을 통하여 보다 새로운 방법으로 연구 제작한 작품을 선보이며 교류하고 있다. 작품의 재료가 다양해 졌으며 표현에 있어서도 embroidery, macrame, knitting, crochet, coiling twining등의 여러기법으로 평면은 물론 3차원적 공간구성으로까지 표현 범위가 넓어지고 있다. 이 논문에서는 18세기 중엽이후, 현재에 이르기 까지 섬유예술의 발전과정을 살펴보았다.
