Paper Architecture에 표현된 초현실주의적 특성에 관한 연구 : Coop Himmelb(l)au와 Lebbeus woods를 중심으로

Abstract

The Purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between contemporary Paper Architecture and Surrealism. Surrealism is emerged as a form of revolution with a full of vibrant volition to present and overcome a newly integrated world by association the contradiction and opposition of reality. And the meanings and expressional features of Surrealism are applied in Architecture. Particularly, it is remarkable in Paper Architecture. The process and composition of this study constitutes total four chapter and the detail constitution follows As Follows the Chapter One, as an introduction to the paper that describes the background, the object, the sphere and the method of the study. In the Chapter Two, investigate the features of Surrealism and Paper Architecture and then find out similarities. The methods of surrealism which is similar to Paper architecture are as follows; objective accident, Trompe-l oel, symbolic expression of unconscious desire, and black humor. Paper architects are made a match for the surrealistic painters and their works are compared with the surrealism works. In the Chapter Three, investigate the works of Coop Himmelb(l)au and Lebbeus Woods and find out the meanings and properties defined in chapter 2. Coop Himmelb(l)au and Lebbeus Woods are representative Paper Architects in 20^th century. Their works expressed surrealistic features. Coop Himmelb(l)au s expression is very experimental and bold. They tried new and various architectural experiments. Lebbeus Woods s expression is very grotesque and melancholy. He expressed his unconscious desires in drawings. His drawing is very visionary. The methods of surrealism that affect on the 20^th century architectural design are as follows; juxtaposition of object, open structure, recomposition of program, and experiment of deconstruction. Juxtaposition of object in this paper has developed from objective accident in Surrealism. Open structure has developed from Trompe-l oel in Surrealism. Experiment of deconstruction has developed from symbolic expression of unconscious desire in Surrealism. Experiment of deconstruction has developed from black humor in Surrealism. Surrealistic ideas and features effect on contemporary Paper Architecture and propose a new vision and possibility.; 이 논문의 목적은 현대 Paper Architecture와 초현실주의의 상관성과 표현 특성을 알아보는 것이다. 현실에서는 불가능하지만 내면에서 꿈꾸는 이상향은 예술 사조에서는 초현실주의로 나타났다. 초현실주의는 현실세계에서의 탈출을 시도하는 동시에 현재의 위치를 보다 높은 차원에서 찾으려고 했으며, 현실적인 것과 비현실적인 것을 통합시키려는 노력을 시도해 왔다. 초현실주의 작가들은 미지 속에 있던 정신세계를 그림으로 보여 주었으며 꿈, 공상, 죽음, 환상 등을 통해 인간의 내면적 세계를 표현했다. 건축에서는 Paper Architecture에서 이러한 양상을 찾을 수가 있다. Paper Architecture의 가장 큰 특징은 반드시 실현되지 않아도 된다는 점이다. 따라서 Paper Architecture를 통해 실현성을 배제한 새로운 형태와 비현실적인 상상력을 실험적으로 시도해 볼 수 있었다. 새로운 건축 질서에 대한 갈망과 새로운 기술과 재료에 대한 유토피아적인 상상을 종이 위에 표현하였던 것이다. 본 연구에서는 초현실주의의 각각의 개념과 표현적 특성이 Paper Architecture에 적용되고 있으며, 특히 현대 건축에서 새로운 디자인 방법으로 응용되고 있음을 알아보고자 한다. 본 연구는 총 4장으로 구성되어 있으며 다음과 같이 전개된다. 제 1장은 본 논문에 대한 소개로 연구의 목적과 범위, 방법에 대해 서술하였다. 제 2장에서는 Paper Architecture에 표현된 초현실주의적 특성들을 연구하고 유사점을 밝혔다. 초현실주의의 각 기법들은 Paper Architecture에 객관적 우연, 비현실의 사실적 묘사, 무의식의 상징적 표현, 검은 유머 등으로 표현되었다. 본 연구에서는 각 특징에 적합한 초현실주의 화가와 건축가를 연결시켜 비교 연구하였다. 객관적 우연의 특성을 가장 잘 보여주는 화가로는 Giorgio De Chirico를 Paper Architect로는 Piranesi를 선정하였다. 비현실의 사실적 표현은 Salvador Dali와 Archigram을 대응시켰으며, 무의식의 상징적 표현은 Joan Miro´ 와 Boulle´e, Ledoux를 검은 유머는 Rene´ Magritte와 John Hejduk을 선정하여 각각의 표현적 특성을 살펴보았다. 제 3장에서는 앞서 2장에서 정의했던 초현실주의의 특성에 맞춰 Coop Himmelb(l)au와 Lebbeus Woods의 작품을 분석하였다. Coop Himmelb(l)au와 Lebbeus Woods는 대표적인 현대 Paper Architects이며 그들의 작품은 초현실주의적인 특성을 잘 나타내고 있다. Coop Himmelb(l)au의 표현은 매우 실험적이고 대담하다. 그들은 이성과 합리성에 의존하지 않는 디자인 방법론은 사용하여 새롭고 다양한 시도를 적극적으로 보여주었다. Lebbeus Woods의 작품은 매우 그로테스크하고 우울하다. 그는 즉각적인 드로잉이나 콜라쥬 기법을 사용하여 자신의 무의식을 표현했다. 그가 표현한 기존의 공간과 새로운 공간이 만드는 우연적인 공간들은 매우 신비로운 느낌을 준다. 또한 실내의 광경을 묘사한 그림은 마치 초현실주의 화가의 작품을 보는 것 같은 시각적 충격과 우연적 신비감을 준다. 초현실주의의 특성은 20세기 현대 건축에 오브제의 병치, 개방구조, 프로그램의 재구성, 해체적 표현으로 나타난다. 오브제의 병치는 초현실주의 기법의 객관적 우연에서, 비현실의 사실적 묘사는 개방구조에서, 프로그램의 재구성은 무의식의 사실적 묘사에서, 해체적 표현은 검은 유머에서 비롯된 것이다. 초현실주의에 나타난 이념과 조형적 특성은 여러 가지 표현양식에 따라 다양한 형태와 의미로 Paper Architecture에 표현되었으며, 건축의 다양화와 새로운 가능성을 제시하고 있다.
