무용의 초기 현대화 과정에 나타난 인상주의 예술사조의 영향 : 던컨과 니진스키의 작품세계를 중심으로

Abstract

본 논문은 무용의 초기 현대화 과정에서 드러나는 인상주의적 요소를 파악하기 위해, 이 시기의 대표적인 두 인물로 던컨과 니진스키를 선정하여 이들의 작품과 사상에서 인상주의 예술과 공통적인 특징을 보이는 요소들을 지적하는데 초점을 맞추었다. 본 연구는 모든 예술 분야에 걸쳐 혁신적인 현대예술을 이끌었던 인상주의가 무용 예술에서는 전혀 나타나지 않았던 것일까 하는 의문에서 출발하였다. 이에 연구자는 무용예술에서 역시 그 초기 현대화 과정 속에서 인상주의적 요소가 드러날 것이라는 전제하에 논의를 전개하였다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서는 무용의 초기 현대화 과정을 대표하는 인물을 던컨(Isadora Duncan)과 니진스키(Vaslav Nijinsky)로 선정하여 이들의 작품과 사상을 살펴 그 속에서 지적할 수 있는 인상주의 예술의 특성과 공통적인 요소를 중심으로 고찰하였다. 이에 연구자는 던컨의 인상주의적 요소로 전통에 대한 대립, 주관과 자아의 표현, 플롯의 약화와 시각적 인상의 강조, 자연에의 주목과 유동적 움직임을 지적하였고, 니진스키의 인상주의적 요소로는 반(反)전통적 특성, 플롯의 약화와 무대의 시각적 디자인의 강조, 움직임의 해체와 조립을 각각 지적하였다. 본 연구는 당시의 무용에 지금까지 간과되어 온 인상주의 예술사상에 관한 논의를 시작하였다는 점, 타(他)예술에서 다루어진 요소를 같은 시기의 무용분야에서 찾아 적용해본다는 점, 그리고 이러한 논의를 통하여 무용의 현대화 과정을 설명하는 또 하나의 기초를 제공한다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있겠다. ; The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of Impressionism on the early modernization of dance. It is well known that Impressionism was deeply influenced by human society during early modern era. During this era, old system based on the traditional authority was destructed. And Impressionism showed the superiority of sensitivity over rationality, subjectivity over objectivity, and an instant over eternity. Although Impressionism was a powerful influence in many genres of fine art, literature and music, its bearing on modern dance was not as significant. The main question raised in this study was whether Impressionism ever appeared in the history of modern dance. This question was explored by first comparing dance and other fine arts of the same period, then examining the works and the thoughts of Isadora Duncan and Vaslav Nijinsky, the two representatives of the early modernization of dance. Through this study, the freedom from ballet tradition, the personal expression of artist, the descending of drama with the raise of visual stage art, the focusing on the nature as a subject of dance, the experiment of movement as an end of dance were found in the early modernization of dance as the similarities to Impressionism. According to these conclusions, the following elements were pointed out from Duncan and Nijinsky. The opposition to the tradition, the expression of subjectivity and the "I", the weakening of plot and the stress on the visual Impression, the attention to the nature and unfixed movements were found as the elements of Impressionism in Duncan s works. In works by Nijinsky s, the break with convention, the diminution of plot while emphasizing on the visual effects, and the dissolution and assembling of movements were revealed as Impressionistic characters. Although Impressionism did not play a major role in modern dance history, the characteristics of Impressionism can be seen during this era, supporting the fact that dance joined the mainstream of art from this time. Through this study, the discussion on the Impressionism in dance is begun, the relation between dance and the other arts at the same period is searched, and another foundation explaining the modernization of dance is presented.
