윤회의 상징성에 대한 섬유조형 표현

Abstract

불교에서는 인간은 윤회를 통해 현생이라는 일회적인 삶으로 마감 짓지 않고, 또 다시 태어나 생을 반복한다고 본다. 이러한 윤회의 개념은 인간으로 하여금 자신의 삶을 돌아보게 하는 동기를 부여하고, 동시에 삶의 새로운 측면을 이해하고 세계를 재인식하는 기반을 마련해 준다. 그러나 이러한 윤회의 개념은 단지 인간의 지각만으로는 파악하기 불가능하다. 그리하여 이 윤회의 개념을 시작도 끝도 없는 무한 순환의 의미를 가지는 원이라는 조형 요소를 이용해 조형표현으로 어떻게 연결하고 승화시킬 것인가 하는 것이 이 연구의 기본 목적이다. 무한 순환의 의미를 지닌 원은 다양한 상징적 의미를 가진다. 그중 시간과 공간으로서의 의미는 사물의 내부와 외부를 나선형으로 넘나드는 삶의 흐름을 연상하게 하는 동시에 삶의 흐름 속에서 자아의 중심세계와 타인 세계와의 조화와 통일을 상징한다. 원은 윤회의 의미를 함축하는 도형으로서, 윤회의 순환적 상징으로 받아들여져, 예로부터 작가들은 원이 지닌 의미 즉, 무한 순환의 의미와 반복되는 삶의 흐름이라는 내재적인 의미로 윤회를 반복적으로 조형화하고 표현하였다. 이처럼 오랜 동안 동양과 서양을 막론하고 원의 이미지는 인간에게 매우 친근한 의미와 상징으로 사용되었다. 이에 본 연구는 만물은 유전한다는 윤회의 개념을 바탕으로, 시각과 지각으로 표현이 불가능한 윤회의 순환적 이미지를 원이라는 시각적인 상징적 조형요소로 표현하고자 하였다. 연구내용은 다음과 같은 이론적 배경을 바탕으로 하였다. 첫째, 문헌자료를 통하여 동양과 서양의 철학적 개념으로서의 윤회의 개념을 살펴보았다. 둘째, 원의 의미와 상징성 그리고 윤회의 순환적 의미로서의 원에 대해 살펴 보았다. 셋째, 원을 조형화하여 작업한 기존 작가들의 작품들을 제시하고 분석하여 근원적인 조형관을 확립하였다. 작품 제작방법에서는 첫째, 작품을 표현하기 위한 주기법으로 weaving과 tapestry기법을 사용하였다. 직조의 기법으로는 plain weave, twill weave, double weave과 m s & o s기법을 사용하였다. 부기법으로 coiling, sewing, collage로 표현하였다. 둘째, 윤회의 개념을 상징화한 원의 형상을 기본으로 하여 윤회의 원 내부의 이미지인 삶의 이미지를 크게 두 가지 기법으로 나누어 표현하였다. 직조와 타피스트리를 이용해 표현한 작품들과 무한 순환의 의미를 작은 원에서 큰 원으로의 확장으로 해석한 작품을 구체적으로 표현하기 위해 다양한 재봉사를 이용해 sewing기법으로 표현하였다. 셋째, 윤회의 순환표현을 위해 piece의 중첩으로 만들어진 원들과의 상호관계와 집합, 그리고 piece의 반복과 변화는 공간감과 공간의 표현에 있어 평면적인 공간에서 출발하여 입체적인 공간의 확장을 보여주었다. 결론적으로 본 연구에서는 윤회의 이미지를 무한 순환적이며, 반복되는 삶의 흐름이라는 원의 이미지를 이용, 주관적인 해석을 통해 작품 제작으로 재구성해 나타내고자 하였다. ; In buddhism they understand that, through cycles of life, a human being does not finish one s life after the current life so that one lives through many lives. This concept gives a person an initiative to retrospect his life, and at the same time provides a foundation on which he can understand the new aspects of life though cycles of life and can acquire the foundation of recognition of the world. However, this concept of cycles of life an idea that is almost impossible to comprehend only with human senses. Therefore, the basic purpose of this study is to find its meanings, which has no start or end but endless circulation, and how the meaning can be connected and be sublimated into formative expression. Circles that has meaning of endless circulation have various symbolic meanings. Of all the meanings, it can be associated with a flow of life which frequents spirally the inside and the outside of an object as a symbol of time and space and at the same time it symbolizes the harmony and unification of ego-world and the other worlds. Circles are expressed as a figure of implying cycles of life as well as a circulative symbol of transmigration of souls. From old times, artists used meanings of circles to express the implications as a symbol of cycles of life with an idea of endless circulation and repeating flow of lives, are expressed formatively and repeatedly. In this way, whether it was Oriental or Occidental, the image of circle are used as a symbol and meaning which are very familiar to human being for long time. This study are based on the idea of cycles of life which says everything transmigrates. The study tries to express the abstract and circulative image of cycles of life with a visual symbolic form, which is a circle. The content of study are based on these theories. First, a literature research is performed to find the concept of cycles of life as a philosophical concept of the Orient and the Occident. Second, the concept of circle, and its symbolism, and the concept of circulation of cycles of life are researched. Last, the arts of artists are presented and analyzed to establish the fundamental formative views. In making the art, weaving and tapestry are used as the main method of expression. Plain weave, twill weave, double weave and m s & o s techniques are used for the weaving. Secondarily, coiling, sewing, collage are used. Second, two methods are used to express images of life which are the image inside the circle of cycles of life with a basis of the cyclic symbol of cycles of life. It is expressed as a plant using weave and tapestry. Furthermore, various sewing arts by different sewers are used to concretely express the circulative meaning for other formative expression. Last, to express the circulation of cycles of life, interrelations and sets of circles made by superposing pieces, and repeat and change of pieces showed the extension from a start at a planar space to a dimensional space in sense of space and the expression of space. As a conclusion, this study tries, by recomposing a subjective analysis into making a work and by using the image of circle which implies repeated flow of life, to present the image of cycles of life which cannot be understood using visual and perceptive senses.
