Abstract
; Characters are the basis of communication in human society, replacing objects. These characters have been playing an important role in making a developed society by smoothing communication. They are an plane being that are direct, abstract and instructive, and the reflections of each nation s thoughts, history and culture. Also, characters have their unique structure for each nation, and their shape and function have been changing according to the change of time and thoughts, and they were sometimes used as patterns that have a symbolic meaning. Hereby, this study has a purpose to examine the characteristics of longevity and happiness [壽福] patterns that contain our thoughts and custom through modern embroidery work. As a theoretical background, this study looks at the history and modeling character of longevity and happiness [壽福] pattern, second, the meaning and characteristics of longevity and happiness [壽福] pattern, third, the characters shown in modern art and longevity and happiness [壽福] pattern presented in modern fiber art, and I apply hem to modern embroidery work. As an expression method, this study transforms characteristics by analysing longevity and happiness [壽福] pattern, and composes them with ten creatures that symbolize longevity, bats and butterflies that have the same meaning with longevity and happiness [壽福] patterns. By composing the form of my work with whoi [回] that represents eternality, I express the eternality of longevity and happiness, and internally existing human desires by overlapping transparent of semi-transparent materials. For materials of this work, I use vertical silk, polyester, polyurethane and film, and for embroidery, I use cotton, gold and silver thread and mono-filament. As embroidery skills, Pypingsu(plain broidery)is mainly used as well as Olsu, Jaryunsu, Jaritsu and Seselsu and Soksu for cubic image. By analyzing transformed character patterns(〔壽福〕longevity and happiness) and expressing the painting characteristics of simplified characters into modern embroidery work, I came to a conslusion as follows. First, using the effect of direct messaging among the characteristics of 壽福(longevity and happiness)patterns, I tried to show our ancestors attitude toward life to modern people, and visualized human basic desires. Second, I classified 壽福(longevity and happiness) patterns into cursive charactes, and designed it graphically for modern senses. Third, while most of modern arts show only one between the two functions of characters-carrying the meaning of characters and aesthetic aspects, the application of 壽福(longevity and happiness) patterns enabled this work to have both two functions. Fourth, I made a cubic effect by embroidering both on the back and front of poly-urethane, and overlapping it. As mentioned above, I d like to suggest expression methods that can show modeling characteristics made by messaging and transforming characters by using the simple characteristics that come from the communication function and shape of 壽福(longevity and happiness).
