Abstract
; The present study was a descriptive correlation research that compared the stress and mental health between housewives and working wives, and identified the relationship between stress and mental health. The subjects of this study were 277 house wives, 373 working and total 650 wives who were selected through convenience sampling. They were residing in urban areas in 2002, had one or more children, and aged between 20~59. Data collection was carried out twice between the 2nd and 6th of September and between 18th of September and 18th of October in 2002 using a structured self-report questionnaire. As for the research tool to measure stress, this study modified the questionnaire that Lee Gwang-ju (1988) created by adapting McCubbin s Living Event List to Korean family life. To examine mental health, this study used a simple mental health test composed of 90 questions, which Lee Hun-gu developed through performing a factor analysis on the list that Kim Gwang-il and Won Ho-taek created by modifying the Symptom Check List (SCL), which Derogatis et al. improved Hopkins Symptom Check List (HSCL). Collected data was analyzed through descriptive statistics using real numbers, percentages, means and standard deviations, and through t-text, variance analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regress analysis. The results of this study are as follows. 1. Housewives stress appeared 1.75 which is not serious level and the relationship with children appeared 2.06(p>.05). Housewives mental health appeared 1.87 which is not serious level and the obsessive-compulsive appeared 2.27(p>.05) 2. With regard to stress by job existence, housewives stress appeared not to be significant difference and 1,78. In case of working wives, their stress appeared 1.73(p>.05). With regard to stress by factors, housewives appeared to be significantly different in the stress caused by accident, disease and death of friends and relatives (p<.05). 3. With regard to stress by demographic-social characteristics, housewives stress appeared to have significant relationships with age, satisfaction with marriage, family type, husband s job, husband s support, and physical health (p<.05). In the case of working wives, their stress showed significant differences according to satisfaction with marriage, family type, position in husband s family, academic qualifications, the kind of job, husband s support, babysitter, the reason for working, and the type of job (p<.05). With regard to socio-demographic characteristics, the mental health of housewives appeared to be significantly different according to satisfaction with marriage, family type, husband s support, and physical health (p<.05). The mental health of working wives appeared to be significantly different according to husband s support, physical health, and the reason for working (p<.05). 5. Stress and mental health appeared to be in a positive relationship where mental health was better when stress was lower (p<.05). According to the results of this study, the stress and mental health of housewives in the Capital and newly satellite cities are not serious level. Housewives stress and mental health score is under the mean. The result is related in middle classes characteristics which are living in the Capital and newly satellite cities, aged between 30~40, graduated university, nucleus family type, satisfacted with marriage life, having household affairs helper and doing leisure. Thus, it is necessary to support housewives in the Capital and newly satellite cities with nursing intervention to control stress and improve mental health.
