단위형태의 반복을 통한 자수표현 연구 : 작품 제작을 중심으로

Abstract

단위형태의 반복은 회화, 조각, 건축, 공예 등에서부터 생활전반에 걸친 디자인에 이르기까지 많은 영역에서 보여지고 있다. 단위형태는 작품표현의 대상이 되는 자연, 또는 사물 그 자체일수도 있으며 가장 단순화되고 정제된 형태일 수도 있다. 단위형태는 자유로운 형태의 변형이 용이하며 여러 가지 조합방법을 통해 다양하게 구성될 수 있다는 가치를 지니고 있다. 이러한 단위형태를 보다 쉽게 효과적으로 표현할 수 있는 방법으로써 반복 표현방법이 있다. 반복을 통한 구성방법은 가장 기본적이면서도 다양한 효과를 낼 수 있는 방법으로서 모든 분야에서 사용되어지고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 연대저수에 있어서 단순화된 대상을 단위형태로 취하여 반복표현하고 이렇게 제작된 작품을 통해 다양한 형태구성과 표현방법 및 형식의 범위를 넓히는데 있다. 이론적 배경으로는 첫째, 일반적 의미의 단위형태의 개념을 고찰하고 단위형태의 특성 및 조합 방법과 그 효과를 분석하였다. 둘째, 반복에 대한 개념과 반복의 유형 및 조형적 특징을 분석하고 셋째, 현대 자수에 나타난 단위형태의 반복 표현과 형식을 살펴보았다. 작품의 재료로는 수직실크, 노방을 바탕 천으로 사용하였으며 면사, 견사, 합성사 등을 이용하여 수를 놓았다. 또한 부조적 표현을 위하여 우드락, 솜, 비닐호스, 동선 등을 병행하여 사용하였다. 자수기법은 선을 표현하기 위해서 비닐호스와 동선에 실을 감은 후 징금수하여 주었고 이음수를 병행하였으며 면을 표현하기 위해서는 평수, 벌집수, 쌀알수, 흐름수, 깔깔사를 이용한 자수기법 등을 이용하였다. 작품형식은 단위형태를 응용, 반복한 형태를 외곽형태로 취하거나 단위형태 자체를 피스(piece)로 제작하여 부조적으로 조립하여 표현하였다. 현대자수에 단위형태의 반복을 통해 형태 및 구성 표현한 것을 적용하여 작품을 제작 분석함으로써 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 단위형태는 여러 가지 조합방법을 통해 형태를 표현할 수 있는 모티브(motive)로 사용하기에 적합하였다. 둘째, 단위형태를 반복 표현함으로써 통일감, 율동감, 강조와 대비, 균형과 같은 다양한 공간 구성 효과를 나타낼 수 있었다. 셋째, 투명성을 가진 노방을 사용함으로써 보다 효과적으로 빛의 투과성을 표현할 수 있었다. 넷째, 일반적으로 수를 놓는다고 할 때 수를 놓아 표현하고자 하는 부분과 수를 놓지 않는 부분이 있다. 본 작품에서는 표현하고자 하는 부분에 수를 놓지 않음으로써 그 빈 공간을 이용하여 작품을 표현하였고 이를 통해 다양한 표현방법을 보여주었다. 다섯째, 우드락과 같은 부재료를 사용하여 입체감을 부여할 수 있었고, 반짝이는 합성사를 사용함으로써 빛의 느낌을 좀 더 사실적으로 표현할 수 있었다. 여섯째, 단위형태의 반복을 이용한 피스작업과 평면, 부조적인 조립 등 다양한 형식의 표현으로 현대 자수의 표현방법 및 형식의 범위를 넓힐 수 있었다. ; Repetitive patterns of the unit form can easily be observed in so many things that surround us, from the tiles on the kitchen walls, to the art works such as paintings, sculptures, handicrafts and even in architectures. Unit forms are also found in the nature. An unit form can be the form of an object itself or be represented in a simplified or refined form of the object. It can also change its size and shape easily. In order to use an unit form effectively, we can use a repetitive method. As a structural means, repetition has been widely used as a basic method. The purpose of my study is to take a simplified form of an object as an unit form and express it through the repetition method. The following are theoretical background. First, I looked up a definition of "unit form". Then, I analyzed the effect and the characteristics of the unit form. Second, I focused on the use of the repetition : a pattern using repetition and effects of using such patterns. Third, I took a careful look at the repetitive use of unit forms in contemporary art. Fourth, I focused on how the unit form and the use of repetition applied to modern embroidery art. I used different kinds of silk for a ground fabric and a variety of kinds of cotton, silk and a synthetic thread for embroidering. To give a full body to each work, woodlocks, cotton balls, narrow plastic hoses, and wires were used. To express narrow lines, I used couching and outline stitches using narrow plastic hoses and wind-threaded wires as materials. To express plane dimensions, I used satin stitched, rice stitched, honeycomb stitched, water stitches, etc. The construction of my works is based on applied and repeated unit forms. My works are expressed using the technique of making quilt and embossing of unit forms. As a result of my study, I had the following conclusions : First, the unit form are most suitable to use with the repetitive method. Second, the unity, contrast, balance, or emphasis through the repetition technique can be used effectively to express the spatial construction. Third, the see-through silk can express the lucidity of light effectively. Fourth, embroidering all other parts except a specific object is an effective technique of making the object a special one. In other words, using blank space for the specific object rather than filling it in is a more effective technique to emphasize that object. Fifth, by using supplementary materials, like woodlock, I can give a body to a work, and by using synthetic threads I can express light realistically. Finally, these technique of putting together the individual works created by using the method of repetition of unit forms and building the individual works on a plane give more variety to the techniques of modern embroidery art.
