문화 메타포로서의 생태학적 이미지

Abstract

20세기 모더니즘(Modernism)미술에서 일관되어 왔던 하나의 흐름은 “조형 요소의 순수성 추구” 라고 지적 할 수 있을 것이다. 그 결과 미술은 형식주의적 경향을 띠게 되었으며 개인적인 것들, 즉 심리적이고 정신적인 면의 내용들은 경시되어왔다. 그러나 포스트모더니즘(Post-modernism)의 대두로 인해 미술은 커다란 전환의 국면을 맞게 되었고 형식과 내용상의 모든 원칙들을 뛰어 넘어 여러 미술경향의 공존을 인정하는 다원주의 미술을 등장시켰다. 이는 그 이전까지 미술사의 외곽에서 비주류(非主流)로 취급되어 오던 주제들에 대한 새로운 시각을 부여 하였으며 수평적 다양성을 중시하는 시대의 조류(潮流) 속에서 본인이 관심을 보여왔던 개인에 관한 문제, 즉 자신의 정체성을 찾아가려는 노력들이 작품화될 수 있는 가능성의 길을 열어 주었다. 본인은 작업을 함에 있어 수반되는 모든 행위와 의식은 자신의 내면에 잠겨있던 것들을 끄집어 내어 스스로를 알아가는 과정이라고 생각한다. 이는 곧 자신의 정체성에 관한 물음이며 이것이 선행될 때 비로소 타인과 세계를 바로 인식할 수 있을 것이다. 따라서 본인은 자신의 정체성에 대한 해답을 찾게 되었고 이것이 모든 개인의 특성을 하나로 포괄하는 문화와의 관계 내에서 풀어져야 함을 인식하였다. 그리고 이를 뒷바침해줄 하나의 원리로써 생태학을 채택하게 되었는데 이는 환경과 여기에 반응하는 생태계의 구조가 마치 인간이 자신의 문화에 반응하는 것과 동일한 구조를 띰으로써 인간의 내면적인 단면들을 은유적으로 보여주기에 적합했기 때문이다. 이와 같은 맥락에서 시작된 문화에 대한 연구는 생태학적인 내용과 이미지로 드러나고 있다. 그리고 이를 위한 표현적 방법으로써 본인은 상상력의 작용으로 채택되어진 재료들을 조합해 새로운 이미지의 오브제를 만들어 내고 있으며, 여기에 상징성을 내포한 의미를 부여 함으로써 작품자체가 생태계의 움직임을 가장한 이미지로 보여지도록 하고있다. 이제 본인은 자신을 알아가기 위한 물음으로써 “문화란 무엇인가?”라는 질문을 시작한 셈이며 그러한 질문의 근본적 의도가 자신을 포함한 보편적인 인간이해를 겨냥하고 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 본 논문은 제작 논문으로써의 성격을 가지며 본인 작품에 대한 설명으로 이루어져 있다. 즉, 개인의 자아에 대한 관심으로부터 출발한 정체성의 문제가 사회와 문화로 확대 되었을 때 드러나는 현상을 생태학적으로 이해 하게 된 배경과 이를 시각화 하기위해 채택한 상상과 상징 그리고 그 집결체로서의 오브제를 연구하였다. 마지막으로 본인의 작품을 분석 함으로써 작업에 대한 반성과 함께 앞으로의 작업방향을 모색해 보았다. ; One of major trends in 20th century is Modernism, which is ‘pursuit of pure form’. As a result, formalism was emphasized while the content of individual spirit was despised. However, Post-modernism changed this trend, and finally brought the Pluralism which approve the various artistic trends. It also gave the belief that the effort to search for self-identity could be an art. Art could be started from something that exists in the depth of the individual. In other words, art is the image of self-speaking toward the world, and the expression of self-conscious on perception. Culture which includes the individual’s characteristics was recognized as the clue to understand the self-identity and Ecology was selected as one of principles to reveal the relationship between individual identity and culture, since the structure of Ecology seems to be the same as that of human beings. Therefore, the research of culture was expressed as Ecology and its image. Imagination was adopted for this expression, and new image objects were created through the combination of imagination. The main purpose of this paper is the explanation of my work. This consists of the interest of the self-identity, the background of the approach to society and its culture through Ecology, and the study of imagination, symbols, and objects for visualization. In last, the direction of further work was also sought as well as the reflection of the presented work through the analysis of my graduate work.
