Abstract
Orchestral song is featured as a new genre of the end 19th century. In the mid 19th century, some of composers attempted to arrange the piano songs to the orchestral songs. In the end of this century, Wolf, Mahler, R. Strauss, Piztner, and Reger became the most famous composers with their vigorous writings. Accordingly, this thesis aims to analyze 「Vier letzte Lieder」 by Richard Strauss, who took an active part in German music from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of 20th century. His works vary from opera, tone poem, chamber music to chorus, piano song, and lied. R. Strauss composed more than 200 songs in his life, and this allowed him to set up the firm standard of German lied. R. Strauss distinguished himself with his detailed and varied expression especially in orchestral song which was originated from piano song. This feature appears well in the 「Vier letzte Lieder」, the song for the vocal and the large scale orchestra. In this thesis, the trend of orchestral song in the last 19th century and the composition style of R. Strauss were studied. Also, 「Vier letzte Lieder」 was analyzed in the view of musical features such as structure, harmony progress, melody, rhythm, motif and in the view of the relationships such as music and poetry, vocal parts and orchestral parts. The conclusion of this thesis shows that R. Strauss composed 「Vier letzte Lieder」 for the large scale orchestra using various wind and string instruments with detailed and profound expressions. The structure of each song is divided into 3 or 4 sections, and all of them are perfectly matched with the structure of the poem except the third song. Every song has a prelude and a postlude. Also, the first, second, and third song has an interlude. In the view of composition technique, the harmony progress is shown with the chromatic scales. The motifs are appeared, varied, modified in 2 or 3 types. Most of all, Strauss put emphasis on how to transfer the poem to the song. Therefore, the accompaniment part pictorially describes the atmosphere and the scene of the poem. The specific words are stressed by melisma if is needed, and orchestra accompaniment part is composed of vocal melody and unison. 「Vier letzte Lieder」 is very distinctive work with the features of its own orchestral song. R. Strauss put all of his efforts to this work as a orchestra conductor, a tone poem writer, and lied composer.
