C. Franck의 '프렐류드, 코랄과 푸가'에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 필자의 석사 과정 이수를 위한 졸업 연주 곡목 중 프랑크(Ce sar Auguste Franck 1822-1890)의 「프렐류드, 코랄과 푸가」 (Prelude, Chorale and Fugue)에 관한 연구이다. 프랑크는 후기 낭만 시대의 프랑스 기악 음악, 특히 건반 음악의 발전에 크게 공헌한 작곡가로 여러 분야에 걸쳐 많은 걸작품을 남겼다. 그의 음악의 기본 이념은 고전적인 흐름 속에 구축되어 있긴 하나 변하기 쉬운 화성이나 급작스런 전조, 구성상의 자유로운 시도에 있어서는 낭만주의적이었으며, 반음계적 선율과 순환 형식에 의한 주제 배치가 음악적 특징으로 나타난다. 또한 프랑크는 오르간 음악에서 그의 탁월한 재능 즉, 풍부한 대조적인 하모니, 다양한 색조의 음색 등의 순간적인 영감을 갖고 연주 할 수 있는 즉흥적인 연주가이기도 했다. 그의 후기에 작곡한 피아노 작품 「프렐류드, 코랄과 푸가」는 구성, 주제의 전개, 그리고 피아노 기법에 있어서 오르간적 효과와 바하(Johann Sebastian Bach 1685-1750)의 작품에 대한 영향이 피아노 위에 가장 뚜렷하게 반영된 것으로서 그의 피아노 작품뿐 아니라 근대의 모든 피아노 작품 중에서도 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 프렐류드(Prelude)는 전통적인 형식을 사용하고 있고 코랄(Choral)은 프렐류드와 푸가(Fugue)를 연결시키는 삽입구로서 즉흥적인 양식으로 되어 있다. 푸가는 제시부, 발전부, 종결부로 나뉘고 프렐류드와 코랄의 요소가 복합적으로 나타나 있는 자유로운 형식의 푸가이다. 그리고, 각 부분의 주제들을 공통적인 요소를 가지고 발전시켜 나가는 순환 형식을 사용하여 곡의 통일성을 주는 특징을 보이고 있다. 이 작품은 구성과 주제의 전개 등에 있어서 고전주의적 프렐류드와 푸가 양식에 프랑크의 독자적이며 개성적인 면을 잘 융합시킨 작품이다.

; This paper is an analysis and study of the 「Prelude, Chorale and Fugue」 by Ce sar Franck (1822-1890) which was part of the musical program of the writer s recital. Franck was a French composer and an outstanding organist who made a great contribution to French instrumental music, especially keyboard music, in the late Romantic period. His favourite composer was J.S.Bach, he learned the classical style of L. Van Beethoven, and was also influenced by R.Wagner and F.Liszt s chromatic harmony. The 「Prelude, Chorale and Fugue」 is a forceful, virtuoso work for the solo piano and one of the best-known pieces by Franck. It is based on the classical prelude and fugue by J.S.Bach and utilizes Franck s unique style of cyclic form. The Prelude uses the traditional form of two contrasting themes. The Chorale is an episode which connects the Prelude and Fugue, expands the whole structure, and suggests the effects of organ playing. The Fugue can be divided into three sections - an exposition, a development, and a closing section. Franck used the established features of style from earlier periods such as counterpoint, sequence, augmentation and diminution of rhythm and inversion of themes in his work, along with more romantic techniques such as use of the chromatic scale, 7th and 9th chords, and enharmonic modulation along with liberal modulation. The 「Prelude, Chorale and Fugue」 is a well-balanced piano work based on the classic prelude and fugue form but enhanced by Franck s own style.
