Abstract
; The society of globalization and information in the 21st century requires a man with the general ability to solve problems with creativity. Music education at school also necessitates comprehensive musicianship through integrated education of all related fields instead of limited levels of music ability. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine theories of comprehensive music education and to discover the effect of comprehensive music education and the possibility of its application by comparing it with traditional lesson methodology. As a theoretical background, this study understands the concept of comprehensive music education and the affective domain through the precedent studies and literature studies. Also, it focuses on the contents of the 7th curriculum for the third grader of elementary school. Through this, I developed teaching plans for eight lessons by comprehensive music education by reflecting the contents of music education curriculum for the third grader. Lessons were practiced for two divided groups- a test group and a control group. As a result, I compared learning achievement and musical attitude of the test group, which was taught by comprehensive music education, and the control group, which was taught by a teacher s manual. To examine students attitude toward music, I conducted a survey. By taking a re-evaluation with the same questionnaires after the test period was over, I searched if there was any change of attitude toward music through the test. As a result, in most questions, the test group showed superior responses compared to the control group. Especially, the test group students presented very positive traits in the activity like singing, instrument playing and appreciation when compared to those in the control group. It implies that being provided various activities for the musical experience positively affected the students. In the test of learning achievement, the average of the test group is X=11.72, and that of the control group is X=10.58. According to the result of taking a t inspection of the two groups, it is statistically meaningful at t=3.10 and α<.05. This result leads to the conclusion that the test group which had comprehensive music education acquired more than the control group which had a traditional lesson. In comparison of correct answers for each question, the test group was superior to the control group in the general questions that require the ability to sense real sounds, understand and analyze it. However, the control group was superior to the test group in comparatively easy concepts such as dynamic and tempo. Through this study, I found that comprehensive music education exerts a positive influence on students musical achievement and musical attitude, and it is an effective method of education that can synthetically raise their musical growth. Hopefully, future studies will cover all grade of students through sufficient time of experiment for the systematic development of comprehensive music education.
