Abstract
The age of electronic book and publication (hereinafter "eBook") is said to have begun. An article of Electronic Newspaper of 23rd of February, 1995 predicted the extinction of a paper book. At the time of the prediction, a most typical form of eBook was CD-ROM based. Today, the eBook has developed to a stage where it calls for a unique field of its own in the on-line networked environment. This research discusses the present status of the eBook both in Korea and abroad, based on the overall analysis of the literature and other data collected. Mainly, it focuses on clarifying the definition of eBook, its process of development to date. In addition, current situation in both national and foreign markets for eBook is described with a specific emphasis on the technical problems concerning active marketing of eBook. In the abroad, it has been observed that in the U.S., standardization effort was made through the activities of associations such as Open eBook Forum (OEBF). As the result, standard has been set with the Open eBook Standard (OEB). The U.S. market for eBook has become accelerated by the participation of the two large firms, Microsoft and Adobe and the market is expanding globally in terms of production tools and the viewers. In Japan, the standardization is implemented with JEPA by promoting a standardized definition of JepaX. However, the hurried creation of the large scale consortium was received with rather negative responses from the industry. On the other hand, Singaporean eBook is mainly concentrated on the educational aspect of eBook and led by the government, unlike Japan and the U.S. Production of eBook involves hardware industry, software industry and the contents industry. Korean eBook industry is characterized by the provision of the contents via the unique terminal, viewer and production tools of each industry. The commencement of the eBook industry of Korea was later than that of Japan, while they do not currently show much difference. However, the Korean eBook market shows several problems. First problem concerns the standardization of eBook technology. Until last year, there was no available standard within Korea and each industry had developed on their own. In April 2001, EBK (electronic Book of korea) adopted the EBKS (eBook Korea Standard) version 1.0. According to this standard, XML format is adopted as the text format, and metadata is based on the Dublin core. Encoding of Korean language is based on Uni-code. However, there are no standard for security for documents and eBook software as well as the standard for terminal. Second problem concerns the protection of copyrighted material. In the abroad, eBook hacking has occurred already, and in Korea, similar problem is discussed together with the technical protection against unauthorized copying of the copyrighted materials. Industries are currently research extensively on DRM, DOI, INDECS and Watermarking and the like. However, compatibility and standardization have been questioned. The solution is believed to lie with a flexible security system that can encompass many different security methods that is at the same time compatible to other security system. Third problem concerns an exclusive terminal for eBook. It has been pointed out that the reason for failure in marketing eBook is the lack of portability and readability. An exclusively eBook-only terminal would solve this problem. Already, readability solutions such as clear type and cool type have been suggested. Moreover, technologies such as e-ink or e-paper, which can replace LCD, could also make eBook-only terminal more accessible. Fourth problem concerns the creation of niche in the market by the distinction of eBook s contents. For eBook development in the market, eBook needs to distinguish itself from printed books in terms of its contents. It is believed that the interactive contents, specialized contents that require search function, and detailed or small scale contents are suitable for this aspect of eBook development. Fifth aspect concerns the distribution of ebook through electronic library. While a systemic structure for the individual users is established, those for group users are not discussed. Electronic library is central for the development and distribution of eBook. For the promotion of national electronic library, various systematic methods such as attaching sensors for eBook to read digital information, new system of circulation for lending, and a search and copying system for the contents of eBook should be prepared. This thesis reviewed overall facts and information and discussed the problems and solution on the newly emerging eBook. It is believed that eBook can be actively marketed and used, if some of the problems as discussed in the above can be solved. Further research concerning the solutions for these problems is called for.
