Abstract
; The reason why the Holy Bible, the core of Christianity, is full of praise to God is that God gave human beings music to praise Him first. Accordingly, music plays a very important role in worship. However, Korean churches do not recognize the importance of church musicians who have expertise in this music genre, taking charge of music in church, but treat music as a subsidiary aspect of worship. In this situation, the reestablishment of worship music and studies on what music can really please God are desperately needed. Accordingly, the purpose of God s giving music to humans, the exact definition of worship music, the status and content of worship music used in each different worship form, and the music education are examined as follows: God gave music as a tool of praise to human beings, and worship music has the absolute purpose of praising only God. Human beings variously express their praise to God according to their environment and cultural background, and worship music has been expressed in different forms according to the time and place, and even today it exists in various forms. In biblical music, vocal music was more valued than instrumental music. In ancient Israel s temple,‘singing’was considered to announce God s words, and it made the mood of joy and festivity, used with instruments, dance and cheers. In Jewish Synagogue worship,‘psalms’was substituted for the sacriticial system in a temple, with Bilble reading, its interpretation and regular prayers, and pure lyrics without instrumental accompaniment. Worship musicians described in the Bible had pride in that they were specially selected to proclaim God s word, and they had been prepared forthis life by studying God s word as well as by thorough music education. In a temple service, there was a music superintendent or conductor who took charge of the music, music teachers, choir and orchestra and the only thing a congregation did was shouting a short refrain, but in the synagogue, there were no music superintendents or conductors, or choir and orchestra, so a leader or a precentor ‘hazzan’, led the synagogue worship in singing themselves. ‘The cantillation of the psalms and the pentateuch’ and ‘the recitation of the prayers’ used in a temple were passed down to the synagogue. The death on the cross and the resurrection of Jesus Christ completed the sacrificial worship of the Old Testament, and Christianity started to form having the unique part of new spiritual worship within the tradition of synagogue worship. Accordingly, psalms in the Old Testament often used in the synagogue worship was highly valued, and new poems, imitating psalms, to praise Jesus were created. After that time, the early church used psalmody, hymns and spiritual songs. First, ‘psalmody’ means ‘psalms’ in the Old Testament, and three canticles and the doxology in Luke, similar to the psalms, praising Jesus Christ. Second, ‘hymns’ means a new form other than psalms, and praise by the use of poems effected by Hellenic music. Third, spiritual songs were works of a broader meaning and spiritual expression, and they include spontaneous and inspired praise, ‘alleluia’ and ‘jubilus’. Considering these features of music for worship in the Bible, the following are the desirable features we should pursue for music in worship and church musicians. First the music should be God-oriented, spiritual and varied but in an orderly manners. Also, church musicians and leaders should be professional church musicians having knowledge as spiritual leaders. They should concentrate on God, and praise him with the most beautiful features possible, with the salvation and joy. This must be the kind of worship music God really wants.
