Abstract
This study is an attempt to understand the double-binding experiences of ‘women with disabilities’, a subject brought into light with the growing interest on the gender perspective of the disability issue. This is also a search into disabled women’s identities. Thus, the chief question asked here is, ‘how are the double-binding identities and marginality of a disabled person and a woman being experienced in the lives of women with disabilities?’ As the aim was to get at the real life experiences of women with disabilities in Korea, the interactions between disability and gender in the specific conditions of life were given special attention. The experiences of women with disabilities were reconstructed through the qualitative methodology of in-dept interviews on their lives. The main object of analysis was the job experience, through which the social disablement of the women with disabilities would be disposed. The job experiences of individual women were approached within the overall life context and the self-identification process. The questions posed in the research are as follows. First, what do women with disabilities describe themselves by? How do the factors of limitations resulted by the disability, family background, necessary aids, relationships with non-disabled people, the presence of a disability community, self-respect, economic circumstance, education, etc. construct the lives of women with disabilities? Second, what are the factors that intervene in the course of meeting with the society and having a job? Third, how does the prevalent standard of normality in the labor market maximize the limitations of the disabled women’s bodies? What meanings does the disabled woman’s body originate in the occupational qualifications built around the standard of the healthy man? Fourth, when do women with disabilities come upon the gendered experience as a woman and how is this different from that of women without a disability? How is the meaning of the difference of body reflected in the experiences of disabled women within certain working situations? The theoretical position on disability of this research is that disabilities are a social·cultural construction. The effects caused by a disability vary according to social·cultural conditions. As is shown in many experiential studies, a disability can be understood as a relative concept that bears different meanings in different societies. The values and meanings of the body are made into a hierarchical order according to the dominant notions held by the society, which can be described as able-bodyism. ‘Body politics’ can be defined as the mechanism in which the form·function, gender, class and race are intertwined to create embodied differences and these in turn are put into hierarchy, leading to the formation of the social meanings of power and inequality thorough the medium of the body. The results of the research are as follows. First, the women with high bodily limitations in the disability hierarchy based on the ability to walk are segregated from society, experiencing an expectancy that is far-off from the standard of the mainstream and qualitatively different. On the contrary, the women with relatively low degree of disability and limitations are allowed to be integrated in the world of the non-disabled. These women are encouraged to adjust themselves to the standard of the non-disabled, and experience a confusion of identity upon the demand to overcome their own disability. Second, looking into the difference of the body in the context of labor, it was found that the social system centered around the body and productivity of the non-disabled man reproduces a hierarchy of the body through ‘normality’ and genderizations, showing the ‘politics of the body’. As women with disabilities carry on their working lives, they experience social disablement as their bodies meet with the fast moving pace and the non-disability social structure. Their situation is aggravated through the working condition of depending on the colleagues for help without any systematic support and the exclusions and discriminations through paternalistic jestures based on the prejudice of incompetence and neediness. Third, within certain contexts of working in the labor market, women with disabilities come upon the experience as women, namely the demand for miscellaneous chores and sexual harrassement. But this is an experience of the double-bind of being normalized into a woman and experiencing gender discrimination, a different context from women without disabilities. Also, the disabled women’s work are marginalized through the limited labor forms such as at-home work. Through the experiences of the disablement of women with disabilities, the changeableness of the concept of disability has been made clear. The bodies of women with disabilities that are differently treated in different situations show that the concept of disability needs to be expanded to include the diverse bodies that have difficulties in surviving in this society. This study has suggested an insight into the possibility of deconstructing the concept of disability.
