판화를 응용한 패션 일러스트레이션 연구 : 에칭(etching) 기법을 중심으로

Abstract

현대의 패션 일러스트레이션은 과거의 단순한 스타일화에서 탈피하여 하나의 독립된 예술 분야로 발전한 만큼 이에 대한 예술적이고 창의적인 표현 기법의 개발이 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 그러나 국내에서는 독특한 표현기법이 풍부한 판화를 패션 일러스트레이션에 응용하려는 연구가 아직 제대로 이루어지지 않고 있는 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 판화기법 중에서도 특히 에칭을 이용한 패션 일러스트레이션을 연구하고자 하였다. 에칭은 부식의 정도에 따른 선의 다양한 굵기와 명도 조절, 선과 선의 교차로 인한 면의 표현 등 선적 요소에 의한 다양한 표현이 가능하다. 이러한 특성의 선들을 반복적으로 나열하거나 여러 방향으로 중첩시킴으로써 생기는 명암처리를 통해 화면에 무게감과 고전적인 회화미를 주어 패션 일러스트레이션에 전통판화 표현기법을 도입하고자 하였다. 또한 풍부한 재질감을 표현하기 위해 닥지를 이용한 쉰 콜레(Chine Colle) 기법을 복합적으로 활용함으로써 패션 일러스트레이션의 표현 영역을 확대하는 데 그 목적을 두었다. 연구의 내용 및 방법은 이론적 배경으로 패션판화의 개념과 역사적 고찰, 에칭의 개념과 발전과정 및 제작 방법을 국내외의 문헌을 통해 살펴보고, 현대 패션 일러스트레이션에 활용된 작품의 사진 자료를 수집, 정리하여 분석하였다. 작품 제작에 있어서는 아쿼틴트(aquatint)나 전사기법을 혼합하기도 하여 더욱 회화적인 표현을 추구하였다. 이론적인 연구의 결과로는 패션판화의 발전사를 고찰함으로써, 문명의 발전에 따른 판화기법의 발전 및 축적된 지식들이 패션판화의 수준을 예술작품의 경지로 끌어올렸으며 이에는 패션 전문 잡지들의 역할이 컸음을 알 수 있다. 작품의 제작을 통한 결론은 첫째, 에칭 니들을 이용한 선적인 묘사는 가늘고 굵음, 반복적인 선에 의한 명암처리 등이 자유로우며 이러한 선의 효과는 섬세하면서도 전통적 판화 이미지의 표현에 적합하였다. 둘째, 쉰 콜레 기법을 배경에 사용함으로써 다양한 종이 소재에 의한 풍부한 질감 표현이 가능하였으며 명암 대비를 위한 검정 색 잉크 프린팅으로 시작적 효과를 더욱 극대화 할 수 있었다. 셋째, 선적인 요소로써 이미지를 묘사하는 에칭은 회색부터 진한 흑색까지 면적인 요소로써 화면에 톤(tone)을 주는 아쿼틴트 등의 다른 기법과의 적절한 혼용을 통해 더욱 회화적인 표현이 가능하였다. 본 연구를 통해 패션 일러스트레이션에 있어서 에칭의 다양한 표현 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다. 앞으로 연구가 다루지 않은 여러 판화 기법들과 에칭을 혼합한 기법들이 더 많이 연구되고 새로운 재질의 판과 다양한 소재의 종이가 개발된다면 패션 일러스트레이션의 예술적 표현 영역이 더욱 확대되기를 기대한다. ; Modern fashion illustration has grown up to form an independent field of arts, and this has encouraged the development of artistic and novel technics in the field. In this country, however, not so many efforts are found in applying print-making technics to fashion illustration. In this regard, this paper studies the application of etching, one of the print-making technics, to fashion illustration. Since etching is composed of lines, which vary according to the extent of erosion , and of the surfaces created by crossings of the lines, it is an appropriate technic to express delicacy. Therefore, this study intends to give classical images to fashion illustration by etching, with its repetitive use of lines and their shades. In addition, in order to express rich texture, the Chine Colle technic with Korean traditional paper is experimented. The purpose of this experiment is to enlarge the realm of fashion illustration in terms of its technics. As theoretical framework, this study first examines the history of fashion plate and the concept, development, and printing process of etching through bibliographical research. Then it presents photographs showing some relevant works of fashion illustration. As to the working process, the aquatint or the transcription processes are combined to etching, and Chine Colle is used for the background. These steps have produced 10 pieces of fashion illustration works containing elegant and classical dresses. The conclusions that can be drawn from this study are: First, by examining the history of fashion plates, it can be said that the development in technics together with accumulated knowledge have exalted the level of fashion plates to that of arts. Fashion journalism has played a pivotal role in this elevation. Secondly, the linear drawings done with etching needles allow degrees of lines and shades. These linear effects are appropriate for the conveyance of delicate and classical mood. Thirdly, Chine Colle technic used for the background creates rich texture according to different kinds of papers. Black-ink-printing for contrasting effect of shades maximizes this visual effect. Fourthly, etching, with its image-making through lines, can produce more picturesque expression when used with other technics such as the aquatint. Through this study, it could be asserted that etching contributes to fashion illustration in various ways. Further studies on other etching technics and on new materials would more advanced works in fashion illustation.
