Abstract

본 논문은 최재서 비평이론의 수립과정과 함께 이 이론을 1930년대 우리 문단에 어떻게 실제 적용하고 있는지 고찰함으로써 한국문예비평사에서 최재서 비평활동의 의미를 규명하는데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 지금까지 최재서에 대한 연구는 대부분 사상사적인 면에 국한되어졌고, 비평론의 부분만을 부각시켜 평가되었기 때문에 문학비평의 전체에 대한 실증적인 고찰이 제대로 이루어지지 못 하였다. 따라서 최재서 비평론이 한국문예비평사의 대표성을 지닌다는 전제 하에서 출발한 본 연구는, 기존 연구에서 더 나아가 최재서 비평이론의 핵심을 파악하고 당시 문단에서의 실제 비평활동에 초점을 두고 그 논의를 전개하였다. Ⅱ장에서는 최재서 문학이론의 기초를 마련하고 있는 서구주지주의 문학론을 최재서가 어떻게 수용하는지 살핌으로써, 주지주의 세계관과 최재서 비평의 인식 배경의 상관관계를 규명하고자 했다. 최재서는 혼란된 당대에 질서를 세울 수 있는 이론으로 주지주의를 선택, 수용함으로써 세계성과 현대성을 확보하고 현대비평의 특성과 방법론을 체계화시킨다. 점차 개인 중심의 자의식에 대한 탐구에서 벗어나 현실에 대해 관심을 가지면서 자신의 비평이론을 완성시켜 나간다. 이 과정에서 최재서는 가치가 상실된 현대에 기준을 세워 줄 질서 개념으로서 ‘전통’을 받아들이고, 자신의 비평론에서 문학을 판단할 수 있는 가치기준의 바탕으로 삼았다. Ⅲ장에서는 최재서가 주지주의 세계관을 바탕으로 자신의 이론을 수립해 가는 과정을 살펴보았다. 최재서는 비평에 있어 가장 중요한 임무를 가치판단으로 설정한다. 취미(가치판단 하는 기능)가 전통에 의해 보편성을 부여받고 일정한 질서를 갖춰 통일된 의식을 이룰 때 교양이 된다. 최재서는 문학 전통을 체득함으로써 교양을 배양해 비평의 토대를 마련하고, 지성을 가짐으로써 비평가의 태도를 수립한다. 비평가 개인의 태도 문제에서 벗어나 현실에 대한 관심이 커지면서 최재서는 비평의 기준으로 보편적이고 포괄적인 가치개념을 추구한다. 이러한 가치의식의 탐구는 ‘모랄’로 귀결된다. 최재서 비평이론은 보편적 가치를 추구하는 과정이고 그 핵심 원리는 ‘모랄’에 있다. Ⅳ장에서는 최재서가 자신의 비평이론을 어떻게 당대 문단 상황에 적용시키는가를 살펴보고자 했다. 그의 비평론의 핵심이 ‘모랄’이므로 본 장에서는 모랄의 실제적용을 중심으로 논의했다. 최재서의 실천 비평은 당시 우리 문단의 당면과제에 대한 비판과 그 해결 방안을 모색하는 방향으로 나아간다. 첫 번째 문단의 타개책으로 내세운 ‘풍자문학론’은 자기풍자로 규정된다. 풍자문학론은 1930년대 중반의 문단 상황 속에서 새로운 논리와 방향성을 제시했다는데 그 의의가 있다. 계속해서 최재서는 리얼리즘론, 중편소설론, 연대기소설론 등을 문단에 제시하면서 비평활동을 활발하게 전개해 나간다. 최재서의 소설론들은 실재성을 추구하는 ‘리얼리즘문학’으로 나타난다. 그의 ‘리얼리즘’은 단순히 사실을 있는 그대로 그리는데 그치는 것이 아니라 삶에 대한 진실성, 도덕적 가치인 ‘모랄’을 지니는 문학이다. 이것은 최재서의 문학이론인 ‘모랄론’이 실제 적용되면서 ‘리얼리즘’으로 구현된 것이다. 한국비평문학사적 관점에서 볼 때 최재서의 비평활동은, 1930년대 우리 문단에 현대 문학이론을 본격적으로 소개함으로써 새로운 문학관을 확립시킨 점, 이를 바탕으로 자신의 독자적인 이론체계를 수립하고 이를 적용시킴으써 당대 문단의 위기를 타개하기 위한 적극적인 비평활동을 한 점, 당시 이해하기 힘들었던 실험적 문학들을 분석할 수 있는 이론적인 배경을 마련한 점으로 미루어 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다. ; The aim of this treatise is examining closely the process of Choi Jae-seo s achievement on criticism and his activities for criticism in the history of Korean literary criticism through considering how his theory is applied to our literary world in 1930. The study on Choi Jae-seo is limited to the historical side of idea and his theory is almost evaluated with one part of criticism side, that s why the enough practical consideration has not been done until now on the whole literary criticism. This study start with the precondition that Choi Jae-seo s criticism represents for the Korean criticism. This study examines the heart of Choi Jae-seo s criticism theory and focused on his real activities in the literary world at that time. In chapter Ⅱ, I try to find out the relations between the world view of intellectualism and the recognition background of Choi Jae-seo s criticism by considering how Mr. Choi accepted the western intellectualism which Choi s literary theory is based on. Choi got cosmopolity and modernity, and organized the character of modern criticism and meathod theroy by chosing and accepting Intellectualism, as a theory which can organise the confused order. He wsa gradually getting out of studying individualism and was completing his own criticism with concern on reality. In this process, he accepted tradition as a meathod which can set up the order in value-losted modern society and made a new standard, and then he took it as a basic standard for evaluating literature. In chapter Ⅲ, I look through the process of completing his theory with his intellectualism background. Choi thought that the most important person as a value judgement in criticism. Choi made a foundation of criticism by realizing the literary tradition and had critic s attitude by having wisdom. According that the concern about reality is getting bigger out of the problem of critic s personal attitude, Choi pursuit the universial and inclusive value concept as a criticism standard. this studying on value examination is resiled to moral . Choi s criticism is the process of pursuing the universial value and moral is the kernel principle. In chapter Ⅳ, I try to examine how he applied his theory to the contemporary literary world. The heart of his criticism is moral , that s why the real application of moral become my kernel issue in this study. Choi s practical criticism is directed to the criticism on the present question of our literary world and made the solution of those questions. The first solution which the literary world showed for the question is satirism , which has special meaning that showed the new theory and direction in the literary world in the middle of 1930. Choi spread out his criticism activity by showing realism , novelettism and chronicle-novelism . His novelism is actualized into realism literature which pursue reality. His realism is not only drawing a simple fact but also having moral value which has truism and moralism in life. Choi s literature theory is actualized to realism with moral theory being applied to his theory. In a view of the history of Korean criticism literature, his activity introduced modern literary theory to our literary world and set up a new literary view in 1930. He organized his own system of theory and his theory was applied to the contemporary literary world to overcome the crisis in literary world, and he made the theoretical background to analyze the experiment leterature which is difficult to understand. His theory is very important in literary world with the above reason.
