Abstract
; Dress and its ornaments are a symbolic mode which directly represents culture, and they variously expressed reflecting the thoughts, spirit and aesthetic value of the times. Preparing for the upcoming 21st century, interest in our tradition and movements to find it are being activated in various fields. Therefore, I d like to create a modern design having traditional beauty through succession rather than the reappearance of tradition by taking our heritage as a source supply of wisdom. Having a purpose of internationalizing Korean fashion and the modernization of tradition, this study applies modif of our folk paintings which involves our ordinary people s faith and hope to modern clothes to link tradition to modern times. For this purpose, I examined the origin, concept, kinds, characteristics, roles and aesthetic ideas of folk paintings through literature study, and also looked at the composition, color, and the characteristic coloring skill of folk paintings for more exact approach to folk paintings through actual practice in a lab. There are 8 works for this study, including shipjangsaengdo, Haehakbandodo, Morando, and whajodo which symbolize longevity, happiness, wealth, health and concord. With these motives, I tried to express various and beautiful colors through aplique, molar skills, using Bogyunnobang material which is thin and transparent and aptterning the whole or part of works. Also, I attached flowers or leaves, separately produced, to give embossing effect to vertical silk material, partly using embroideries. The following are the results of this study. First, by introducing restructured folk painting to dress and its ornaments, our people s aesthetic thoughts are expressed with modern sense. Second, the simple and structured composition and form of folk paintings are suitable for patterning for dress and its ornaments. Third, various and beautiful colors are made unexpectedly by overlapping transparent materials or cutting out the overlapped materials. Fourth, utilizing our tradition with modern sense has a creative competitive power. unique and differentiated in the world stage. Through the results written above, I ve found that to express traditional beauty in modern dress and its ornaments, we should realize universality and unique value which can be shared by the whole world based on correct understanding of our culture religion, art and thoughts and aesthetic ideas suitable for out times not just merely with the restructuring of traditional formal elements.
