플래퍼 패션 디자인 연구 : 미국 재즈시대를 중심으로

Abstract

The purposes of this thesis are for consideration of the flapper fashion(1924-1928) in Jazz Age(1919-1929) of America and connection fashion business with theoritical study by designing from new images. This study is started from the latest fashion trend which is pursuing it s inspiration into the Jazz Age. The back ground of flapper fashion was Jazz. Jazz was one of the cultural languages which expressed liveness, noisy, salacity, harmoney of primitivity and modernity, innocence and freedom. And also there was Jazz Age came into the world. In processing American had gotten economic power, the Jazz Age had new mood which was combined materialism and realitism. Environmatal changes of life styles and development of mass culture of modern big cities could aided the birth of modern girls. They became the main group of new consumer and mass culture in new consciousness and freedom with independence and fredom The etimology of flapper was based on minesis flap such as flutter of skirt hemline, hands, arms, wings and a slang which was applied to young women from 1830. In 20th century it meant not only new American women but also their fashion and attitute. So flapper expressed modernity. The consciousness of flapper were rebellious attitude, liberalism and actualism. The designs of flapper fashion were expressed by simplicity, functionality, nudity and rhythm. Simplicity expressed sexless, bosomless, hipless, sleeveless, short skirt and hair just like boyishness. Simplicity was the best value of this time and the image of simple was considered the smartest. It became the basic form of the 20th century which was related to attitute toword youth. Functionality was represented by straight boyish style and loose baggy silhouette that was related to freedome. The changes of life styles and consciousness could help to movement of womens bodies and gave lightness of fashion which got rid of artificial silhouette. Nudity was expressed by revealing of legs, arms, backs in shapes and see-through by materials. It was related to sexual attraction and point to youth. So flapper fashion included not only simple boyishness but feminin beauty. Rhythm of flapper fashion expressed optical effect of movement. Using of light material was deep related to freedom of flappers, speed, rhythmical Jazz and dancing. It became the beauty of the Jazz Age. These characteristics of flapper fashion was related to originality, nature, primitivity, rhythm and innocence which were Jazz spirit. They were also concerned to dominal phenomina such as persuit of freedom, expression of youth, harmoney of modern and primitivity. There were the internal meanings which were pursuings of modernity, sensuality and young appearence. Meantime the real difference between flapper fashion and La Gar onne was their consciousness. Flapper fashion was pointed to youth expression and La Gar onne was pointed to mannish for compitition to men in society after war. Flapper fashion gave an opportunity that changed fashion leader from high class to young popular group and simple design of flapper fashion effected to modernization and popularization of American apparel business. And it influenced American casual fashion which was known as brightness, youth and openhearted mood. The attitude of modernity, sensualism and point to youth were coincided with new culture like Jazz and dance. So flapper fashion can be started the street fashion of the 20th century. Through this study, flapper image can be presented pretty smart image, minimal image and avant-garde image. Four designs are represented and produced using the pretty smart image which is considered as a good source of 98 A/W trend. The design concept is "flap flap Rosalind" and target is city adult group. For afternoon meetings 4 works were designed including image map, illustrations, order sheets, flat works and made them. As the result, this thesis tried to linking fashion design field as a positive study not only theorical but practical study. This trial can be recognised one of new methods which are introduced practical trend positively in this time. ; 본 연구의 목적은 최근의 패션이 20세기의 초기 특히 재즈시대(Jazz Age : 1919 - 1929)의 특성과 본질속에서 영감을 추구하는 경향이 나타나는 점을 근거로 플래퍼(flapper) 패션의 특성을 연구하고 현재의 시각에서 새로운 이미지를 전개하여 디자인을 직접 기획, 제작하므로써 의류학 분야의 이론적 연구와 실제 산업과의 연결을 도모하는데 있다. 연구의 범위는 패션의 영역에서 재즈시대 플래퍼 패션의 특징인 로 웨이스트와 짧은 스커트 등의 유행이 결정적으로 표현된 1924년부터 1928년까지의 미국을 중심으로 연구하였다. 연구 방법으로는 패션관계 문헌자료와 영화, 비디오 테입 등의 시각 자료, 인터넷을 통한 정보 검색, 그리고 국외의 박물관 자료를 직접 방문 조사하였다. 또한 국내의 성인 여성을 위한 디자인을 기획하고 일러스트레이션과 작품으로 제작하였다. 플래퍼의 등장배경에는 원시와 현대의 조화, 자유를 표현했던 하나의 문화언어로 재즈가 있었으며 미국의 물질주의와 현실주의가 결합하여 탄생한 새로운 분위기의 재즈시대가 있었다. 현대 거대도시의 환경변화와 생활양식 및 대중문화의 발달을 배경으로 플래퍼라는 모던 걸(modern girl)이 등장하였다. 이들은 새로운 자각과 자유의 분위기 속에서 신소비 문화와 대중문화의 주체였다. 플래퍼의 어원은 1830년대부터 야생 오리, 손, 팔, 날개짓, 스커트 단의 팔랑거림과 같은 모습을 표현하는 의태어 플랩(flap)에 근거하며 한편 여성들에게 농담의 성격으로 적용되었던 속어로 사용되었다. 그러나 20세기가 되어서 플래퍼는 미국의 신여성과 그들의 유행, 태도, 경향을 의미하는 용어로 사용되어 플래퍼는 곧 현대 라고 표현되기도 하였다. 플래퍼의 내적 정신은 전통과의 단절을 기본으로 하는 모더니즘적 사고를 바탕으로 반항주의, 자기 정체성(identity)의 자유주의, 그리고 현실주의로 나타났다. 플래퍼 패션의 조형미는 단순미, 기능미, 노출미, 율동미로 표현되었다. 단순미의 특징은 직선형의 실루엣을 중심으로 짧은 스커트의 등장과 짧은 헤어 스타일 등의 보이시(boyish)한 모습으로 나타났다. 단순미는 이 시기의 최고의 가치가 되었고 여기에 부합된 이미지는 최상의 「스마트(smart)」라고 인정 받았다. 젊음 지향적 태도와 관계되어 단순미는 20세기 패션의 기본적 특징이 되었다. 기능미는 직선적인 형태의 보이시한 스타일과 헐렁한 배기(baggy) 실루엣의 자유롭고 편안한 의복으로 표현되었다. 생활 양식과 의식의 변화는 플래퍼의 신체적 움직임을 자유롭게 했고 디테일, 소재 부분에서 이전 시대의 인위적 실루엣이나 평면 장식을 제거하여 패션에 「가벼움(lightness)」을 주었다. 노출미는 짧은 스커트에 의한 다리, 팔, 등의 노출과 같은 형태적 노출과 얇게 비치는 소재에 의한 은밀한 노출미도 함께 표현되었다. 이는 성적인 매력의 표현이었고 젊음 지향의 의지였으며 플래퍼 패션은 단순한 보이시 스타일의 특징 뿐아니라 여성적 매력도 표현하였다. 율동미는 움직임과 같은 시각적인 효과로 표현되었다. 가벼운 소재의 사용과도 관계가 깊으며 자유, 속도감, 재즈의 리듬, 댄스의 빠른 움직임과 부합되어 하나의 시대미로 정착되었다. 플래퍼 패션의 특성은 재즈가 갖는 살아있는 독창성, 자발성, 원시성, 리듬감, 천진함 등의 표현과 관계되며 재즈시대의 지배적 현상이었던 자유의 추구, 젊음의 표현, 현대와 원시(미국과 흑인예술)의 조화와도 관계되는 표현이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 플래퍼 패션에는 현대성 추구, 감각주의, 젊음 지향의 미의식이 내재해 있었다. 한편 가르손(La Gar onne) 패션과는 내적인 의식의 차이를 보였는데 플래퍼는 젊음(youth)지향이 가르손은 남성과 경쟁하려는 의도가 강한 매니시(mannish) 지향이 목적이었다. 플래퍼 패션으로 패션의 리더가 상류 계층에서 젊은 대중들로 변화되는 계기가 되었고 플래퍼 패션의 형태적 단순성은 미국의 의류산업이 현대화되고 대중화되는데 결정적 역할을 담당하였다. 또한 젊고 밝은 해방감과 개방적인 분위기인 미국 캐주얼 패션의 형성에도 영향을 주었으며 재즈와 댄스라는 문화현상과 부합되어 20세기 스트리트 패션의 출발이 되었다. 따라서 플래퍼 패션은 현대 패션의 구체적 특성의 근원이었으며 재즈시대는 현대 패션의 분수령을 제공한 결정적 시대였다. 한편 최근의 패션 경향에 20세기 초기 특히 재즈시대와 플래퍼 패션이 새로운 디자인의 영감으로 나타난다는 점을 근거로 하여 플래퍼의 이미지를 현재의 패션 경향에 맞는「프리티 스마트 이미지(pretty smart image)」, 「미니멀 이미지(minimal image)」, 「아방가르드 이미지(avantgarde image)」로 제시하였다. 본 연구에서는 이 중 최근의 유행 경향에 적절한 프리티 스마트 이미지를 이용하여 디자인을 기획, 제작 하였다. 디자인 컨셉은 「flap flap Rosalind」로 하였고 타깃은 성인 여성으로 하여 애프터눈 모임을 위한 디자인을 기획하였다. 실제 패션 디자인 산업 현장과의 연결을 위해 이미지 맵, 패션 일러스트레이션에서부터 도식화가 포함된 작업지시서까지 작성하여 실제로 작품을 직접 제작하였다. 본 연구는 미국 재즈시대의 특성과 플래퍼의 내적정신을 규명하였고 플래퍼 패션의 조형미를 현재 패션의 흐름속에서 탐구하여 새로운 이미지를 제시하므로써 21세기 패션의 방향 설정에 도움이 되도록 하였다. 단편적 이론 연구에서 벗어나 복식학이 실용학문이라는 입장에서 패션 디자인 산업과의 연결을 모색했다. 이러한 시도는 패션 디자인 연구에 시대의 요구를 실제적인 방향에서 적극적으로 도입한다는 새로운 하나의 방법론을 제시했다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.
