Abstract
; MPLS (MultiProtocol Label Switching), which is regarded as a core technology for migrating to the next generation Internet, can support various high-speed services by providing high-speed switching and traffic engineering. In this dissertation, a QoS (Quality of Service) routing model is proposed in order to provide efficient traffic engineering in MPLS networks. It explicitly differentiates and determines routes according to the traffic characteristics. Also, an efficient traffic flow admission control mechanism supporting DiffServ (Differentiated Service) is proposed to provide QoS in MPLS networks. Various existing QoS routing models can be used within MPLS networks. However, for MPLS networks that support traffic engineering, they lack the ability to determine explicit routes for various types of traffic. The proposed QoS routing model first determines the set of min-cut links of a given network using Min-Cut Algorithm, since these links are potential bottlenecks in the network topology. It then allocates differentiated weights to the links based on their properties and traffic characteristics. Thus, the proposed routing model can select differentiated routes according to traffic types and efficiently protect shortest-paths for high-priority traffic from traffic with lower priorities. In addition, it solves the weakness of the global QoS routing by lengthening QoS state update intervals using local information. In that context, it monitors only those bottleneck links rather than all the links in the network in order to reduce the number of nodes generating control traffic. These two methods reduce routing overhead and in turn, prevent wasting network resources. Therefore, the QoS routing model proposed in this dissertation can be said to efficiently provide differentiated explicit routes to various services in MPLS networks. Research and standardization activities on policy-based resource allocation and flow admission are yet inactive. Since they require centralized servers in the network such as IPOA (IP over ATM), they result in overhead. As a solution to the problem, a mechanism that performs flow admission for DiffServ traffic at the edge of the network without any help of the server is proposed in this dissertation. It dynamically adjusts the amount of admissible traffic based on transmittable capacity over one outgoing port. It then transmits the traffic while avoiding congested area resulting traffic loss. Ingress LSR and Egress LSR may collect information to find out congested area. Egress LSR infers the location using retransmission requests of TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) at terminals. An alternative is to use control messages exchanged that reflect QoS link states in QoS routing. The latter shows better performance than the former. Thus, the proposed model realizes improved traffic engineering by efficient resource utilization and traffic flow admission control while satisfying the MPLS property of separating control and forwarding.
