Abstract
; Kinetic Art, a distinct trend in art from mid 1950’s to late 1960’s, was a revolutionary art form in the sense that it adopted an element of “movement” in fine arts. Based on the study of six leading artist’s work which actually “moves”, this dissertation purports to explore the various aspects of expansion concerning the concept of art work by the element of “movement” In general, fine arts have been distinguished from other forms of art in that they are considered to be spatial art or static art. Especially, the Modernist critics insisted that work of fine arts should maintain its unique characteristics. Integration of the element of “movement” in the work of art implies the fundamental denial of such traditional definition of fine arts and furthermore the broadening of the concept of fine arts. Formal, methodological and social aspects of expansion of domain of fine arts which Kinetic Art implies will be examined in this study. In terms of its formal aspect, Kinetic Art extends to the outer world. In other words, the boundary between the art object and its surrounding space becomes ambiguous, or they penetrate into each other. “Illusion” in the work of art serves as an important element which distinguishes the art work from reality. By eliminating “illusion of movement” in a work of art, the element of “movement” makes the art object exist in reality. “Open from” which opens up the contour of shape is a surrounding space. In Kinetic Art, the aspect of “open form” is emphasized because boundary of forms becomes meaningless. Particularly, the nonmaterial elements such as light make a work of art and the reality literally penetrate into each other due to their mobility and permeability into both material and nonmaterial substance. The element of “movement” serves as an important factor in adopting the means and forms of other disciplines to fine arts. The work of fine art assumes the form of performing arts since it bears the element of “time” which distinguishes performing arts such as music, dance and play from fine arts. In addition, active application of scientific knowledges or mechanical devices to make the work of art “move” promotes the unification of fine arts and technology. In integrating a work of art to society, the element of “movement” also serves as a positive factor. Social integration of fine arts can be achieved either by placing a work of art in social environment or by bringing the members of society closer to the art work. The former is called the public art whereas the other is called the art of spectator participation. Kinetic Art is apt for a public art in modern sense in that it shares the common characteristic of modern environment which is constantly moving and changing in its form and meaning. Since the essence of Kinetic Art is the process of time, Kinetic Art allows or even induce the spectators to participate in the temporal process of transformation of the art work. The spectators participate in various ways from visual reaction to actual manipulation of the art object. Public art or art of spectator participation can serve as a means of democratization of art since they make the public closer to the work of art. As mentioned above, Kinetic Art, by means of its element of “movement”, shows various aspects which open up the traditionally closed boundaries of the fine arts. Uniting the fine arts to the outer world or other disciplines is one of the major issues of the 20th century art, which is also proposed by other trends. Kinetic Art can be distinguished from other trends in the sense that it integrates a work of art to reality not by adopting things or images from reality but by making the created object reside in reality. Especially, an attempt to let the work and reality penetrate into each other by utilizing nonmaterial elements is a distinct aspect of Kinetic Art. Kinetic Art can be distinguished from other trends also by the fact that it adopts the forms or means of other disciplines such as performing arts or technology and by the fact that it adapts itself to the reality positively instead of participating in reality with criticizing attitude.
