Abstract
Art, connected inseparability with requirements of society and spirit of the times, naturally adopted postmodernism for seeking new expression suited for compound and pluralistic cultural environment. Postmodernism which reflecting reality is regularized after world war II and still changing continuously, influencing many areas. Postmodernism which denies enormous metaphor that seeks absolute truth and unity in everything, is characterized by transcendental genre, compromise forms, pluralistic and popularity, mutually exchanging texts. It is based on pluralism which understands different between forms and styles. Theses characteristics found in society in general. Application of each genre is different but showed clearly in architects, music, painting and theater fields. In this time period, modern ballet staredto embody varicolored, innovative synthetic ballet, attempted to combine variety of art genre to renew understanding of traditions, added a theatrical art tech. As a result, nowadays, modern ballet's expressions and territories are extending and progressed into the future unpredictably nearly the same manner like modern dance. Thus, this thesis has purpose on advance and extending artistic possibilities through meaningfully received the proper understanding of contemporary thoughts by analyze the modern ballet works from postmodernism point of view. I analyzed three modern ballet works such as Mats Ek's 「Swan Lake」 that showed characteristics of postmodern parody, Jiri Kylian's 「Kakuya Hime」 that showed ability to blend of different elements, compromising quality and Boris Eifman's 「Red Giselle」 that showed compromising and plural quality. In this thesis, I analyzed the three works in four sides, such as construction, movement, theatrical effect, artistic meaning. Accordingly, I draw a conclusion as following. First of all, from thematic and constructional sides, Ek's 「Swan Lake」 reinterpreted classical masterpieces and in Kylian's 「Kakuya Hime」 abstract elements coexisted based on stories and folk literatures, in Eifman's 「Red Giselle」 borrowed the cinematic elements and materials from history, literature. All these three works borrowed materials from many fields, so that it induces audience's participation and enlarged modern ballet's artistic expression through multimedia methods. Secondly, in movements, all three works used varieties of movements that transcendent genres through compromised, combined methods. Accordingly, they provided possibility of mutual understanding as kind of expressional method for maximize the expression. Thirdly, in theatrical effect, all three works used theatrical technology combined with theatrical, musical elements, technological devices ect. it is based on postmodernism's pluralism, keeping independent from each different genre and same time mutually connected, showed wholly effective performance that dance performance could present. Fourth, in artistic meaning, Ek's 「Swan Lake」 enlarged modern ballet's territory through conversion of concept such as postmodern parody. Kylian's 「Kakuya Hime」obtained very experimental result that unified methods through compromising, combined movements. Eifman's 「Red Giselle」 accomplished plural, wholly and spectacular theatrical art performance through combining other art fields so that contributed popularization of modern ballet. Thus, in the period of postmodernism, modern ballet materialized newly develop aesthetic value using abundance of possibilities in expression methods, and seeking freshness through corporation, borrowing from each other genres artistic expression is enlarged. Nowadays, modern ballet secured popularity by reappraise the audience as active being and expends its territory gradually.
