사회적 역할의 가치화론을 활용한 장애관련 보도행태에 대한 내용분석

Abstract

For the development of welfare for the disabled, it is necessary to improve the social recognitions to overcome prejudices and distinctions about the disabled. To overcome these negative perceptions or attitudes about the disabled, the exact analysis of the attitude about the disabled in Korean society is needed to be preceded. The purpose of this research is to examine the recognitions of Korean society about the disabled by analyzing articles about the disabled which appear on Internet newspapers and published newspapers. I intended to establish the base on which to construct new perceptions about the disabled by analyzing how many newspapers put an interest on the disabled and care about them. I especially intended to examine the value of newspaper articles about the disabled based on the Social Role Valorization in this research. The reason for this is that practical recognition improvement can't be expected when there is a lack of understanding about the welfare for the disabled in spite of the struggle of the press to approach positive viewpoints about the disabled. The research materials for the purpose of this research were 548 articles from an Internet newspaper, Oh my News, and a published newspaper, Chosun Ilbo, for a year from January to December of 2004. They were compared and analyzed according to topics, tones and Social Role Valorization matters. The final assessment is to find the appropriate supplement for two newspapers to be improved rather than to examine simple differences of two newspapers' medium properties. The hypothesis to realize this research purpose is as follows. Hypothesis1. There may be differences in the selection of subjects about disability for Oh my News and Chosun Ilbo. Hypothesis2. There maybe differences in tones of Oh my News and Chosun Ilbo articles about the disabled. Hypothesis3. There may be differences in values based on the 'Social Role Valorization' of articles about the disabilities from Oh my News and Chosun Ilbo. The result of analysis showed that Oh my News focused on articles which prosecuted and diagnosed the situation to insist the rights of the disabled, while Chosun Ilbo concentrated on articles which delivered stories about disability conquest and moving stories of successful disabled people, revealing significant differences between both newspapers. In tones of articles about the disabled, most of them had a positive tone. But in the case of Chosun Ilbo, it showed less positive tone and rather more neutral tones compared to Oh my News, and that was another significant difference. In the analysis result based on the Social Role Valorization, which is the welfare principle for the disabled, Oh my News dealt with the disabled, who played positive roles, more than Chosun Ilbo, and this difference was also discussed. In spite of these significant differences, both newspapers were indicated to have biased subjects and inappropriate understandings of disabilities-related terms and recognitions, meaning they both similarly follow a questionable reporting custom in regards to covering the disabled, generally. For the improvement direction of newspaper articles about the disabled, various subjects and approaches with positive viewpoints are required to promote proper understanding of disabled society, and eventually an effort to raise the understanding of welfare for the disabled is needed. This research is expected to play a basic role to improve Korean awareness and attitude about the disabled by activating reports of newspapers with appropriate recognition and attitude about the disabled.;장애인 복지의 발전을 위해서는 장애인에 대한 편견과 차별을 극복하는 사회의 인식 개선이 필요하다. 이러한 장애인에 대한 부정적인 관념이나 태도를 극복하기 위해서는 우리 사회가 가지고 있는 장애인에 대한 태도를 정확하게 분석하는 일이 선행되어야 한다. 본 연구의 목적은 인터넷 신문과 인쇄 신문의 장애 관련 기사를 분석하여 우리 사회가 장애인에 대한 가지고 있는 인식을 살펴보는 것이다. 신문이 장애인에게 어느 정도의 관심과 올바른 인식을 지니고 있는가를 분석하여 새로운 장애인관의 정립을 위한 기초를 마련하고자 하였다. 특히 본 연구는 사회적 역할의 가치화론(Social Role Valorization)에 입각하여 신문에 나타난 장애 기사의 가치를 중심적으로 살펴보고자 했다. 이는 언론이 장애인에 대하여 긍정적인 관점에서 접근하려고 하여도 장애인 복지에 대한 올바른 이해가 부족하다면, 실질적인 인식 개선의 효과는 기대할 수 없기 때문이다. 연구 목적에 따른 연구 대상은 인터넷 신문 오마이뉴스와 인쇄 신문 조선일보의 2004년 1월부터 12월까지 1년간의 기사 548건이다. 이를 주제, 논조, 사회적 역할의 가치화론에 따른 가치를 서로 비교하여 내용 분석하였다. 이는 두 신문의 매체의 특성에 따른 차이를 단순히 규명하기 보다는 서로 보완ㆍ발전해야 할 점을 찾는데 궁극적인 목적이 있다. 이러한 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 가설은 다음과 같다. 가설 1. 오마이뉴스와 조선일보의 장애 관련 기사의 주제 유목은 차이가 있을 것이다. 가설 2. 오마이뉴스와 조선일보의 장애 관련 기사의 논조는 차이가 있을 것이다. 가설 3. 오마이뉴스와 조선일보의 장애 관련 기사의 ‘사회적 역할의 가치화’에 입각한 가치의 차이가 있을 것이다. 분석 결과, 장애 관련 기사의 주제에 있어 오마이뉴스는 장애인의 권리 주장 및 촉구를 위한 고발 진단 기사를 가장 비중 있게 다룬 반면, 조선일보는 성공한 장애인의 극복담과 미담에 관한 기사를 관심 있게 다루고 있어 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 신문의 장애 관련 기사의 논조는 긍정적인 시각이 주류를 이루고 있으나, 조선일보의 경우 오마이뉴스보다 긍정적인 논조가 상대적으로 적은 대신 중립적인 논조가 많아 역시 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 장애인 복지 이념인 사회적 역할의 가치화론에 입각하여 분석한 결과에서도 오마이뉴스는 조선일보보다 긍정적 역할을 수행하는 장애인의 모습을 보다 비중 있게 다루고 있어 매체간 차이가 논의되었다. 그러나 두 신문은 이 같은 유의미한 차이에도 불구하고 기사의 주제가 편중돼 있고 장애관련 용어나 인식에 있어 부적절한 이해가 지적되어, 전반적으로 장애 관련 그릇된 보도 관행을 답습한다는 점에 있어 유사한 양태를 드러냈다. 장애관련 신문 보도의 개선 방향은 장애에 대한 사회의 올바른 이해를 도모할 수 있는 다양한 주제와 긍정적인 시각의 접근이 요구되며, 궁극적으로 장애인 복지에 대한 이해를 높이기 위한 노력이 필요하다는 것이다. 본 연구가 장애인에 대한 올바른 인식과 태도를 담은 신문의 보도를 활성화시켜 우리나라 장애인에 대한 인식과 태도를 개선하는데 기초적 역할을 하기를 기대한다.
