Abstract
Dance may be a total arts as well as one of the performance arts genres. With such a basic conception in mind, this study was aimed at create diverse effects of expression unconceivable with dance only through multi-faceted uses of media. To this end, the researcher examined Meredith Monk's works featuring excellent applications of mixed media to overcome the conditions of dance limited by space and thereby, explored some experimental and unique ways of dance expressions beyond the traditional choregraphy. The post-modernism which began to emerge centered about Europe and the United States since the second world war has also influenced dance. Choreographers have endeavored, being affected by the new wave of arts, to create new dances by using such concepts as accidentality, instant contact, impromptu, real time, happening and ordinary movement. While the traditional dance used motions as means of expressing ideas or emotion, regarding them as media supporting the target ideology, the post-modern dance has attempted to surmount such limits of the traditional dance, representing an reaction to the traditional theatrical dance. Thus, a new relative view emerged, reputing the conception that dance should have certain forms and instead, arguing that body and motion themselves should have meanings and values. Later, as the post-modern dance developed more, it aimed only at motions themselves as a campaign against literary, theatrical, psychological dance, and thereby, insisted on creative dance, but it could not but compromise the theater culture with some post-modern dances absorbed into the theater dance. After such a compromise, the choreography adopted a new mode of pluralism to use diverse media including fine art, photo, music, architecture and moving image and therewith, attempted to incorporate other genres of arts or technologies into dance or compromise them. Thus, while each genre of arts was maintaining its independence, the post-modern dance could surmount the limits of its motion to effect a total arts satisfying human 5 senses. Meredith Monk who was called 'mixed media kid' used multiple media - one media technology mixed into another material - or mix music, moving image, set and rhythmic movement to feature a variety of expressions. He calls his works 'opera', 'theater cantata', 'live film' or 'opera epic'. He used such unfamiliar media as 'live film' or 'picturesque sound' to urge the audience to appreciate dance beyond visibility. Her choreography using the mixed media to upgrade dance into a total arts through equal artistic cooperation with other genres of arts has printed her intention in the brain of the audience, representing experimentality and spirit of challenge of the post-modern dance. If today's modern arts should persue unlimited creation, her experimental and unique choreography using mixed media needs to be accommodated as a form of dance arts. In this context, the researcher reviewed concept and characteristics of mixed media and thereupon, examined Meredith Monk's works 'Vessel', 'Education of the Girlchild' and 'Quarry' in view of their themes, motions, spatial schemes and particularly, use of mixed media, and thereby, analyzed how much such a use of mixed media affected her creative works. It was confirmed through this study that Meredith Monk who used the mixed media in diverse ways for her works opened the possibility of a total arts through diversification and qualitative upgrade of dance expressions with combination of dance and other genres of arts. Moreover, she suggested that space could be free with new spatial expressions, and thereby, presented a new choreography whereby the sphere of expression can be expanded only to allow for new experimental approaches to creation of dances.
