무용공연극장의 사회적 기능에 관한 연구

Abstract

The performance art is a frame of storage to prolong the temporary memory and an onsite art of communication in both certain time and certain space. The dance as a performance art makes an attempt of the most direct communication by using a body as a intermediate medium and represents the non-verbal communication to express aesthetic value in time and space. The theater is a cultural space to enable the dance created as a performance art work to meet the viewers on stage and a space where the communication is exchanged sharing the meaning of dance's characteristics. The theater supporting performance art activities should be specialized by art's characteristics. Nevertheless our performance art theater has been operated for multiple purposes as a cultural complex rather than a specialized theater. Accordingly this study examined the characteristics of a specialized dance theater in terms of space to establish its social functions. The study of the meaning of the dance theater would identify its roles in the social relations and evaluate its value. First of all, the performance art is an art expressing the aesthetic principles in the given space in terms of the characteristics of spatial mechanism of the dance theater. Since the dance has direct influence on the viewer's communication in terms of existence, it is necessary to study the space of the dance theater. The spatial characteristics of the dance theater consist of an illusion space for stage and seats, an architectural space including the supplementary facilities such as lobby and dress rooms, a performance space as an externally organic space in the society. As a public place containing the space for communication in the society, the dance theater has a very critical meaning of positive social function. Therefore the dance theater plays the following roles in the society. First, it has contributed to the cultural industry by producing and accommodating the dance works. Second, it develops and encourages the local culture by attracting people. Third, it plays a social and educational role by offering the lifetime education for dance appreciation and expanding the personal experience. Last but not least, it offers an entertaining and sociable space where individuals can experience the catharsis in the modern materialism society and interact with various people. As described the above, the performance art could not be independent from the performance and theater. Accordingly the specialized theater gains its importance and meaning to enhance the completeness and competitiveness of performance art. Today the art theater becomes a criteria on a nation's stature and decency and furthermore a foundation for cultural and art competitiveness. In conclusion, we need to recognize the dance theater's role as a specialized communication space and establish the desirable cultural art by developing the reasonable and creative dance theaters through continuous effort.;공연예술은 일회적인 기억을 연장하기 위한 저장의 틀이며, 일정한 장소와 시간 속에서 발생되는 커뮤니케이션의 현장예술이다. 공연예술로서의 무용은 신체라는 전달매체를 사용함으로서 가장 직접적인 커뮤니케이션을 시도하고 있으며, 시·공간 영역을 통해 미적 가치 판단을 나타내는 비언어적 커뮤니케이션을 대표할 만한 공연예술임에 틀림없다. 공연예술 작품으로 창조된 무용이 무대에 올려져 관객과 만남을 가질 수 있는 문화공간으로서의 극장은 이런 무용의 특수성을 바탕으로 의미공유의 커뮤니케이션 과정이 이루어지는 장소이다. 공연예술의 활동을 지탱하고 있는 공연예술극장은 분야별 예술의 개성에 맞는 전문화가 뒷받침되어야 함은 당연한 것이다. 그러나 지금까지 우리나라의 공연예술극장은 예술분야별 전문화로 나아가지 못한 채 종합문화회관 성격의 다목적극장의 형식을 유지해 왔다. 따라서 본 연구는 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 전문성을 가진 무용공연극장의 공간적 특수성을 살펴보고, 사회적인 기능을 재정립하고자 하였다. 이는 무용공연극장의 존재의 의미, 즉 사회적 관계 속에서 무용공연극장의 역할을 밝힘에 따라 무용공연극장에 대한 가치 평가를 내릴 수 있기 때문이다. 먼저 무용공연극장의 공간적 메커니즘의 특수성에 있어서 공연예술은 공간을 매개로 미적원리를 발현하는 예술이며, 현존성과의 관계 속에서 관객의 커뮤니케이션에 직접적인 영향을 주기 때문에 무용공연 극장에 있어 공간연구는 반드시 수반되어야 하는 필수적인 요소인 것이다. 무용공연극장 공간의 특수성은 무대와 객석 중심의 일루젼 공간, 무대와 객석뿐 아니라 로비, 분장실 등의 부대시설까지 포함하는 건축학적 공간개념의 극장공간, 외적으로 유기적 공간으로서 사회속의 공연공간으로 나뉜다. 이처럼 커뮤니케이션의 공간을 내포한 사회 속의 공공기관으로서 무용공연극장은 사회적인 기능의 합목적성을 가진 공간으로서 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 따라서 무용공연극장은 사회속에서 다음과 같은 역할을 한다. 첫째, 문화예술로서 무용작품을 생산하고 수용하는 생산과 유통의 문화산업의 역할을 한다. 둘째, 무용의 유인효과로 인한 지역문화 육성의 역할을 한다. 셋째, 개인의 경험의 증대와 무용공연의 미적감상교육을 위한 평생교육차원의 사회교육적 역할을 한다. 마지막으로 현대 문질만능사회를 살아가는 개인에게 카타르시스를 느낄 수 있는 정신적 놀이공간과 다양한 사람들을 만날 수 있는 오락적·사교의 공간으로서 역할을 한다. 이와 같이 공연예술은 공연작품과 공연장을 분리하여 생각할 수 없는 현장예술로 공연예술의 완성도 제고(提高) 및 경쟁력 강화 차원에서 전문 공연장은 그 의미와 중요성을 더해감을 알 수 있었다. 이제 한 민족, 더 나아가 한 나라의 위상과 품격을 반영하여 문화수준의 척도가 되는 공연예술극장은 단순히 공연을 관람하는 향유의 차원을 넘어서 문화예술의 국가 경쟁력 기반이 되었다. 따라서 전문성을 지닌 커뮤니케이션 공간으로서의 무용공연극장의 역할을 깊이 인식하고 지속적인 노력과 더불어 합리적이고 창조적인 무용공연극장의 발전을 통해 바람직한 문화예술을 확립해야 할 것이다.
