현대 물질사회 속에서의 인간상황

Abstract

Our society is infected with avarice. The mechanism of indulged desires stirred up by our materialistic societyhas degenerated modern men into Faustian creatures deprived of their souls, and thus, despite our abundant lives, we are living in an age of loss, becoming more and more desolate with the onset of mental vanity and anxiety. Of course, industrialization has promoted capitalism and developed science and technology, which have improved our standard of living. However, the overflowing materialistic abundance has spread mammonism and inverted the relationship between material possessions and men, and has turned us into materialistic slaves who find their raison d'e'tre in their possessions. And such dependency on material possessions overlooks the importance of the inborn conceptual and spiritual desires, and therefore, we modern men are seldom satisfied, being always haunted by a destabilizing sense of crisis. To explain such a sense of loss amid such abundancy, the researcher questioned again the implications of our modern life and tried to provide a clue as to them. With such background in mind, this study was aimed at visually expressing our modern psychological and mental condition as being lost in the abundant society created by material desire. For a theoretical background, the researcher reviewed the social and cultural backgrounds in which our modern men cling to the life dependent on material possessions, and then, examined cling the social function of art that criticizes such phenomena in our society. Then, the researcher analyzed the contemporary art-works having themes dealing with modern man's materialistic tendency and their appearance as well as their implications. Specifically, the researcher directly described modern man's psychological crisis of degenerating into a materially dependent condition amid superficial abundance and thereupon, expressed their mistaken view in which the relationship between men and objects is reversed. To this end, the researcher borrowed consumption-related images symbolizing the age of materialism and contrasted them with sharp and corrosive materials in an attempt to reveal other aspects of the seemingly positive materialistic society. Furthermore, the researcher used iron to depict modern men's appearance in a constrained space and thereby, feature the inverted relationship between subject and object. 7 art works were sampled to analyze their theoretical backgrounds, contents and methods of expression. For 'Work I', 'Work III', 'Work IV' and 'Work V', ordinary shopping-related spaces and objects - closets, show windows, shopping bags, etc., - were expressed using such materials as steel bars and netting to symbolize the ruling power of the materialistic society and thereby, suggest constrained spaces and then, depict the objects as metaphors for simplified human forms or images therein to reveal the weakened human existence. For 'Work II', 'Work III', 'Work VI' and 'Work VII', the researcher borrowed images related to such luxuries as dress, cosmetics, jewelry and mirrors and then, directly used the luxuries to express them and thereby, reveal their luxurious but rough, sharp and corrosive properties in order to help visualize the dualism of modern materialistic society and modern man's false images decorated by objects and their rear sides with desolate essences. This study purports to illuminate the relationship between material society and men through art-works and again raise the question about the implications of our life in this materialistic society, and thereby, provide an opportunity to reflect on our existence.;우리 사회는 탐욕에 감염 되어있다. 현대의 물질사회가 부추기는 탐닉적 욕망의 메카니즘은 현대인을 영혼이 빼앗긴 파우스트적인 인간으로 전락시켰고, 우리는 풍요로운 삶속에서도 정신의 공허함과 불안감만을 안은 채 점점 황폐해져가는 상실의 시대를 살아가고 있다. 물론 산업화로 인한 자본주의의 성장과 과학기술발달로 인해 인간의 삶의 만족도가 크게 향상된 것은 사실이다. 하지만 이러한 넘쳐나는 물질적 풍요는 물질만능주의 사상을 만들어냈고, 물질과 인간의 주종의 관계를 전복시키며, 현대인을 소유물에 의해서 자신의 존재를 확인하는 물질적 노예로 만들어버렸다. 그리고 이러한 물질 의존적 삶은 인간이 태어나면서 가지는 여러 욕구 중 관념적이고 정신적인 것에 대한 부분의 중요성을 간과시킴으로써 현대인을 늘 만족할 수 없고, 늘 불안한 위기 속으로 끌어들였다. 이렇듯 풍요속의 상실감에 대해 연구자는 현시대의 일원으로서 우리가 살아가는 삶의 의미에 대해 다시 질문하고, 그 단서를 제공하고자 했다. 이러한 배경을 근거로 본 연구는 현대 물질사회가 만들어낸 풍요로움 이면에 상실되어져가는 인간의 존재와 현대인의 심리적이고, 정신적인 상황을 시각적인 형식으로 표현하는데 그 목적을 두었다. 이론적 배경에서는 사회적, 심리적인 측면에서 풍요의 시대에 나타나는 현대인의 지나친 물질적 행복관으로 인한 위기가 어떠한 사회, 문화적 배경에서 발생되었고, 또 어떠한 문제에 직면하고 있는지를 알아보았다. 그리고 그 시대가 처한 현실을 반영함으로써, 그 문제점에 대해 자각시키는 예술의 역할에 대해 살펴보았고, 또 현대 미술 속에서 현대사회의 성향을 반영하고, 또 그러한 삶에서 드러나는 현대인의 모습을 주제로 한 작품들과 그 의미들을 분석해 보았다. 표현내용에서는 표면적 화려함과는 달리 현대인을 물질적 종속물로 전락시킨 현대사회의 지배력에 대해 표현하고, 그로 인해 정신성을 무시하고, 지나친 물질 의존적 삶으로 인해 물질적 노예가 되어버린 현대인의 피폐화된 심리적 위기감을 표현하였다. 표현방법으로는 이를 시각화 하기위해 드레스, 코스메틱과 등과 같은, 과시 소비재와 그 이미지를 차용하여 현대인의 물질욕에 대한 관심사를 드러내고, 이러한 차용된 이미지들을 날카롭거나 거친 철선, 철분, 깨진 유리파편과 같은 재료들로 역설적으로 표현하거나, 병치시킴으로써 물질사회가 가진 화려함 이면의 현대사회의 어두운 단서들을 제시했다. 또 산업사회의 상징적 물질인 철을 이용하여 구속력 있는 형태를 연출함으로써, 산업사회 그 이후부터 비롯되어진 병폐적인 현대의 상황을 암시하고, 그와 함께 익명적 인간의 형태를 직접적 혹은, 은유적으로 그 속에 배치시켜 현대 물질주의사회 속에서의 인간상황을 표현하였다. 작품 분석에 있어서는 7점을 대상으로 이론적 배경과 표현 내용 및 방법을 근거로 분석하였다. 『작품 Ⅰ』,『작품 Ⅲ』,『작품 Ⅳ』,『작품 Ⅴ』는 물화된 사회의 지배력을 상징하기 위해 쇼핑과 관련된 일상의 공간과 사물 - 옷장, 쇼윈도, 가방 등 - 을 철근, 철망과 같은 재료를 이용해 철창과 같은 구속력 있는 공간으로 제시하고, 지나친 물질주의의 경향으로 인해 전이된 정신성을 상실한 현대인의 익명적이고 맹목적인 모습을 『작품 Ⅲ』,『작품 Ⅴ』에서처럼 부피감 없는 고무판을 이용해 직접 단순화된 인간의 형상으로 보여주거나, 『작품 Ⅰ』,『작품 Ⅳ』에서처럼 옷걸이나 마네킹 같이 인간을 은유 가능케 하는 오브제를 통해 그 속에 배치시킴으로써 주체가 인간이 존재가 아닌 사물로 옮겨간 사실을 망각한 현대인의 위기적 상황을 나타내었다. 그리하여 현대물질사회의 강력한 심리적 구속력과 함께 인간이 얼마나 위험한 상황에 처해있는지를 묘사했다. 또한, 『작품 Ⅱ』,『작품 Ⅲ』,『작품 Ⅵ』,『작품 Ⅶ』은 드레스, 코스메틱, 보석, 거울과 같은 사치재와 연관된 이미지를 차용하거나, 재료로서 오브제를 직접 이용함으로써, 그것들이 주는 화려함을 나타내고, 거칠고 날카로운 표현방식을 동시에 보여줌으로써 물질사회의 이중성, 사물로 치장된 현대인의 허상과 본질이 피폐해져가는 이면을 표현하였다. 본 연구는 물질사회와 인간의 관계를 작품을 통해 시각화함으로써 현대 물질사회를 살아가는 우리의 삶의 의미에 대해 다시 질문하고, 자신의 존재에 대한 의미를 반추해보는 기회를 제공하고자 했다.
