플라스틱 필름의 투명성과 스티치에 의한 텍스추어 표현

Abstract

Fiber art has become a significant part of the contemporary art. Fiber art adds to the diversity of the contemporary art by expanding from the traditional techniques and materials to contemporary techniques and materials. In the post industrial revolution era of diverse material availability, introducing alternative textile in the field of fiber art will further strengthen its foundations in the contemporary art. Fiber art appeals more to visual and tactual sense than any other formative arts. Thus, in the field of fiber art, the selection of the materiality is critical. In this paper, the author studies the transparent characteristic of plastic film. The author then suggests an alternative textile by applying different techniques to the plastic film and creating a new texture. Artists have to understand the materiality of their material. Materiality of a material means more than just the material characteristic, it encompasses the natural, spiritual, and emotional characteristics of a material which affect people. In fiber art, materiality provides the idea behind the surface and the form of the texture. Individual materiality can deliver more in-depth understanding of the art form. This makes the materiality more important in the field of fiber art. This study reviews the growth of the contemporary fiber art in the context of the contemporary art. In the historical review, the importance of materiality in fiber art is studied. In an attempt to provide an alternative textile, this study analyzes the multi faceted meaning of transparency and its formative effects. Transparency appeals to the visual and tactual senses. It suggests a metaphoric meaning and also provides a simultaneousness formative character. This special character of transparency is understood and used in many different fields of contemporary art. This proves that transparency provides an appropriate materiality as an alternative textile for the contemporary fiber art. The development history of tools in human society has an important relationship with the formative art history. In the formative art, tools are used as to replace human hands. Tools become a part of the body and provide the individual forms. The author uses a sewing machine as her tool to transform the transparency of a plastic film to a new alternative texture. Interpretation of this new texture suggests an alternative textile for contemporary fiber art. Transparent materiality was understood in her work. She also recreated a new materiality by using the sewing machine as her tool. The author uses furrows to suggest the linkage of openness-relationship-togetherness-acquaintance in her eight pieces of work to propose the idea of making a new relationship and acquaintance with strangers through her art work. The author focuses on using spandex yarn and conventional yarn to recreate the materiality of the transparent plastic film. In the process of recreation, the author uses repetitive forms to have a rhythm and to expand the visual range to tell the spectators more about the formative effects and meaning of acquaintance. This study found that transparency as a materiality is appropriate for suggesting an alternative textile for contemporary fiber art. In the process of transforming the materiality using a tool, a texture's formative character was understood. In the following studies, transparency should be revisited with different materials and different aspects. Also, different tools should be tried to create different alternative forms.;오늘날 섬유예술은 전통적인 기법이나 재료에서 벗어나 현대미술의 다양성을 구성하는 한 부분으로 자리잡아가고 있다. 산업화 이후 재료의 다양화 속에서 끊임없이 변화하고 있는 현대미술의 흐름 속에서 섬유예술이 더욱 확고한 위치를 차지하기 위해서 대안섬유의 제시가 필요한 시기이다. 섬유예술분야는 타 조형예술 분야보다 시각과 촉각에 호소력이 높기 때문에 새로운 물성의 재료선택이 중요하다. 따라서 본 연구자는 플라스틱 필름의 투명성을 제안하고 도구의 사용으로 소재를 변형하여 새로운 텍스추어를 얻음으로서 대안섬유를 제시하고자 한다. 재료를 가지고 수작업을 하는 예술가들에게 물성은 매우 중요하다. 여기서 물성은 물질이 지닌 고유의 성질이라는 의미에서 나아가 본능적, 정신적, 감정적으로 이끌리게 되는 어떤 것을 의미한다. 섬유예술에 있어 물성은 표면의 텍스추어와 형태에 관한 아이디어를 제공하고 그 물성이 담고 있는 독특함이 심오한 의미를 주기 때문에 다른 무엇보다 중요한 요소가 되는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 현대미술 속 섬유예술의 변모과정을 통해 현대 섬유예술로의 이행과정을 문헌을 통하여 고찰하고 그 흐름 속에서 재료가 가지는 물성의 중요성을 살펴본다. 그리고 대안섬유의 물성으로 제시된 투명성의 다중적 의미와 조형적 효과에 대해 분석한다. 투명성은 시각과 촉각에 호소하고 은유성, 동시성을 갖는 조형적 성격을 띠고 있기 때문에 현대미술 전반에 걸쳐 다양한 형태로 시도되고 있고, 현대 섬유예술의 물성으로 적합함을 입증한다. 또한 인간의 역사와 함께 발전해온 도구의 사용이 조형예술 활동과도 불가분의 관계가 됨을 문헌을 통해 고찰한다. 조형 활동에 있어 개인적 도구의 사용은 손의 역할을 대신하고 이것은 ‘도구의 신체화’ 과정을 거쳐 개인적인 형을 제시 할 수 있게 된다. 실제작업에서는 투명성 표현을 위하여 플라스틱 필름을 사용하여 본 연구자의 도구인 재봉틀로 투명한 물성을 변형하여 새로운 텍스추어를 제시하고 이를 새롭게 해석함으로서 대안섬유를 제시하였다. 작품제작을 통하여 재료의 투명한 물성에 대하여 새로운 이해와 접근을 하고 재봉틀이라는 도구 사용의 결과를 가시화 할 수 있었다. 본 연구자가 제작한 작품 8점은 주름 표현을 통해 열림-관계-함께있음-만남의 의미를 연속성의 맥락에서 이해하고 표현하여 작품을 통한 타인과의 새로운 관계와 만남을 시도하였다. 이를 위해 스판덱스 사와 일반 재봉사를 사용하여 플라스틱 필름의 투명한 물성을 변형하고 새로운 텍스추어를 제시하는데 중점을 두어 작품을 제작하여 텍스추어화 과정에서 나타난 형태의 반복이라는 조형요소를 통해 리듬감과 시각의 확장이라는 조형적인 효과를 전달하고 만남의 의미를 드러내려 의도하였다. 본 연구는 투명성이라는 물성이 현대 섬유예술에 제시하고자 하는 대안섬유의 물성으로서 적합하다는 사실을 확인하였고 또한 이 물성이 도구의 사용에 의해 개인적인 형태로 변형되어지는 과정을 통한 텍스추어의 조형성을 보여 주었다. 앞으로의 연구에서는 투명한 물성을 가진 재료에 대한 다각적인 접근과 재봉틀 혹은 다른 조형도구의 사용에 의한 새로운 형태의 창조가 필요하다고 여겨진다.
