색채의 반복을 통한 이상(理想)의 표현

Abstract

19세기 말부터 최근까지 과학 기술의 발전은 인구의 급증과 자연 환경의 변화를 가져왔다. 혁명적인 변화는 인간에게 전례가 없는 물질적 풍요로움을 안겨주었다. 그러나 과학의 바탕인 분석적이고 논리적인 사고에 익숙한 현대인이 상상하는 이상은 그리 낙관적이지 않다. 이미 환경오염, 부의 편중, 인간성 상실 등의 많은 문제점은 근본적인 해결이 불가능하다. 이러한 상황에서 상상 속의 이상향을 쫓음은 몽상가의 허황된 생각처럼 보인다. 현실과 동떨어진 상상의 산물이며 미신의 잔재일 뿐이라고 비판할 수도 있지만, 인간은 더 나은 미래에 대한 동경과 시도, 행복의 기원을 멈추지 않는다. 이상과 현실의 간극에서 인간은 괴로워하지만, 여전히 포기할 수 없는 더 높은 완전함을 꿈꾼다. 더 나은 삶, 행복한 삶을 바라는 인간의 본능적 욕구는 잡을 수 없는 이상향에 도달하길 희망하지만, 인간은 좌절과 허무함을 반복한다. 본인은 지금보다 더 나은, 행복한 삶에 대한 인간의 본능적인 욕구와 이상과 현실 사이의 거리와 다가갈 수 없음을 알면서도 그것을 상상하는 것만으로 위안을 느끼는 본인의 일상의 경험을 다양한 색채가 혼재하며 반복되는 평면회화로 표현하였다. 만다라는 깨달음을 도형화한 것으로 모든 것을 갖춘 부족함이 없는 상태를 뜻하며, 만다라의 치유능력은 심리치료에서 응용되고 있다. 티베트의 불교에서 깨달음에 다가가고자 만다라를 그리는 수행을 하듯, 본인은 작품 제작을 통해 새로운 가능성을 찾아 심리적 평정과 조화를 이룬 상태로 나아가기를 희망한다. 연금술에서 대립된 물질들의 조화가 ‘현자의 돌’로 거듭나는 과정은 초월적인 생명의 신비를 상징하며, 이러한 과정 속에서 연금술사 자신 역시 그것과 같은 경지에 오르기를 기도한다. 상상력을 통한 창조 활동으로서의 예술 행위는 연금술의 ‘위대한 작업’과 서로 맥이 통한다. 본인은 반복되는 색채를 색연필을 사용하여 표현한다. 여러 층의 색면이 쌓아올려진 화면 위에 칠해진 색연필은 다양한 색채의 반복과 연속이다. 인간이 태어나 죽을 때까지 끊임없이 만들어지고 사라지는 희망적이면서도 허망한 꿈들의 행렬이다. 오랜 시간과 노동을 요하는 색연필 작업은 사유의 과정이 무형에 그치지 않고 물질로서 표출되는 것이다. 본인은 창조적 작업 과정을 통해 인간의 한계와 이상에 관하여 고찰하고, 정신과 몸, 의식과 무의식의 조화를 이루며 통합된 자아로 재탄생되기를 희망한다.;Scientific technology's development from the late 19th century until recent years brought about rapid population growth and environmental changes. Revolutionary changes gave the mankind an unprecedented material affluence. However, for the modern mankind, who are used to analytic and logical thoughts based of the science, their imagined ideals are not that optimistic. Many of the problems such as polluted environment, uneven distribution of wealth, loss of humanity are already deemed to be impossible to be solved in its entirety. Seeking the imaginative ideals in such circumstances might be viewed as a dreamer's mindless thought. One might say that it's an imagination distant from the actual world, and remnant of superstition. However, mankind never stops longing and trying for better future, and wishing for happiness. Men suffer from the edge of the reality and the ideal, they still dream of the unrelenting higher perfection. Men's basic instinct, wanting for better and happier life, wishes to reach the unreachable ideal, men continuously repeat the state of collapse and emptiness. I painted the distance between men's basic instinct of wanting the ideal, better and happier life and the reality, and my experience of being satisfied only by imagining the ideal, knowing only too well that I couldn't reach it, by repetition and co-existence of various colors. Mandala is a figuration of the understanding, which means the state of being perfect without any shortcomings, and is also applied in psychological therapy. As Tibet's buddhists draw Mandala as part of their ascetic practice, I wish to find new possibility through my painting and find the state of mental tranquility and harmony. The process of opposite material's harmony turns in to the 'Lapis Philosophorum' in Alchemy symbolizes superior life's mystery, and through this process, alchemist himself also longs to reach that state. Artistic expression as a creation through imagination is in line with the alchemy's 'Great task'. I used colored penciled in expressing repetitive colors. Colored pencils drawn over many color layers represents repetition and continuation of various colors. They are the series of hopeful and yet groundless dreams men dream of and then disappear from the time they are born until the day they die. Tiresome and time consuming colored penciling expresses the process opening up as a material. Through the creative process, I wish to be able to contemplate about the limits of mankind and their ideals, and wish to be reincarnated as an integrated being, harmonious with mind and body, consciousness and unconsciousness.
