Abstract
; The purpose of this work is to analyses the characteristics of the Caldecott medal books from 1938 to 1995 in literature, art, and multiculture. From the present work, the following results are obtained. The literaty characteristics of the medal books were analyses in terms of genre, characters, theme, plot and setting. In genre, the traditional literature is most popular and other various types of genre such as realistic fiction, fantastic/scientific fiction, biographies and poems are present. The most popular protagonists are children. The portrayal of children is mainly based on the friendly relation between children and animals. The analysis of major characters indicated that the relations between children and their parents and grandparents are mutually supportive and respective. The most popular theme is man’s mentality and morality. The themes have varied to the changes of the time. Although most medal books have one plot, there are a few books with more than one plot. Some plots have no implication or causality. Settings were analysed in terms of time and location, and it is found that most of the medal books have specific setting locations. The artistic characteristics were studied in each artistic component such as color, shape, arrangement and space. As far as color is concerned, the use of full color is most common. However, there are some books in black and white or monochrome as well as in limited color. Shape was analysed in terms of the use of geometry pattern. Most of the medal books use one or two arrangements that are closely interconnected with the book stories. Space was analysed according to the space division pattern, in particular, the use of separated painting areas, and 6 painting area patterns. Since the mid 1970’s almost all of the Caldecott medal books have used separated painting area and some new patterns have emerged. The investigation of the multicultural characteristics was carried out on the 33 medal books that exhibit cultures in characters, theme and setting. First, the analysis in genre indicated that traditional literature is the most popular genre of the 33 books. It is quite apparent that traditional literature is the easiest genre in reflecting multiculture, but it would not be desirable to depend heavily on this genre in introducing multiculture. Second, it is observed that there are noticeable changes in multiculture reflection pattern; the interest lied in their own culture, i.e., the American culture in the early years of the Caldecott award inception, then markedly changed to different cultures than theirs, namely to foreign cultures, and recently moved to mutual understandings and harmony with other countries and races. This change of the pattern has something to do with the history of the American multicultural education. Third, it is observed that the Caldecott medal books can be categorised into th ree types depending on whether cultural difference are larger in number than those on cultural similarity. It is interesting that there are some books with cultural difference in one aspect, and cultural similarity in another. The categorisation can be useful in the multiculture reflected book evaluation. It may also serve as a guideline for children book writers who with to develop new kinds of multiculture reflected books. In conclusion, the overall characteristics of the medal books may be identified as diversity, prominent changes in the times, and various culture reflection. Specifically, the books are very diverse in genre, plot, color, arrangement, shape, and multiculture reflection pattern. The chronological changes in the characteristics of the medal books are apparent. Characters, theme and setting are the typical elements in which multiculture is well reflected.
