Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to objectively examine aspects of the theories and practices composing my work, and by so doing recognize the latent meanings thus revealed on multiple levels. In addition, this paper makes clear that such meaning-based analyses and explanations of works concretely demonstrate the aesthetic attitude that has permeated my daily life and efforts. My work begins from a diverse world that bears certain latencies and interesting items showing multiple folds. The world is not a uniform system, but rather a manifold one and its objects contain latent facets longing to be unfolded like the pleats on a skirt and read by us. If we view the world through the jaundiced eye of the intellect, we will only perceive what we expect to see and will never discover that which is not clearly visible. Therefore, rather than approaching an object from the outside like a scientist, for our preferred method of approach we must crack it open to enter and experience it firsthand, as though by intuition. This is the only course to discover the value of latent things. Breaking into an object and striving to empathize with the very core of its existence―this act offers us the opportunity to uncover more of the diverse aspects lying dormant within ourselves. My work also focuses on ‘meaning of sight.’The sight directed towards the center misses much. If you shift it outward toward the peripheries that are imperceptible to a center-oriented eye, you will be met with a newness, as if you had breached a firmly locked box and revealed an entire other world inside. To discover the latent diversity ensconced within everything existing in the world, we need to free ourselves from concepts. This means shifting away from the center. Adjusting one’s line of sight to recognize peripheral values while also never imposing a distinct division between the inside and outside as in Derrida’s notion of the ‘parergon’ helps us observe trivial regions which had been invisible with a fixed line of sight. In this manner, if we transfer our gaze from the center to the peripheries and observe the world, we are able to see what is ‘in between’. The in-between is a space that connects us to the world and a spot where we can find unrevealed latencies. The in-between is a middle zone that enables us to unshackle ourselves from the dichotomous mode of thinking a dichotomous way of thinking it is an intermediate area of contemplation and a zone of manifolds where a blending of differences reigns. Being aware of such an in-between allows one to release latencies as if decoding hieroglyphics. In that case, there needs to be direction to guide us to such features. In other words, to learn how to find the spot that can create a manifold and how to unfold it and to make it my own, I have pursued the contemplation of the in-between. Like Henri Bergson’s notion of ‘attention to life,’ this contemplation of the in-between requires one to readily focus on and precisely observe intrinsically myriad and protean phenomena as they are. Its aim is to find―not through conjunctions indicative of causation such as ‘thus’ or ‘therefore,’ but rather through Gilles Deleuze’s notion of ‘and’―not externally fixed meanings, but fluid significance intended for creation. As a conjunction of diversity, ‘and’ exhibits the symptoms of creation. Its vision of the world is not of a vertical hierarchy like a tree with its roots serving as its core, but rather―through a process of contemplation that resembles an expanding continuum of grass―a vision that converges towards an open system of manifolds that exist in-between objects. Such a process of contemplation awakens seemingly uneventful objects, ones that lie dormant beyond any indifference to objects. With such meaning as its foundation, my work focuses on teasing out the multifariousness inherent in latency and in folds, making it perceptible as well as discovering and realizing the positive distinctions within the everyday. By distinctions, I am referring to differences that permit the coexistence of individual peculiarities and make manifest equality amongst varieties. These distinctions spawn fissures in the quotidian of uniform sensitivities; transform the commonplace into something worthy of observation and pursuit, attracting glances of eager curiosity; and enable one to discover and make manifest the various layers of indistinguishable daily lives. In order to discover latency, I have used the medium of photography to collect objects based on coincidental encounters and given form to the coincidental traces that approximate the photographs through the properties of the material resin, thereby attempting to discover even deeper layers of latency within existing objects. I bring to light the landscape of in-betweens that emerges as a result of shifting my line of sight away from the center and towards the peripheries; refined attention by placing objects within a deserted space of ‘nothingness’ and actualized works of art through a contemplation of the ‘in-between,’a space as unfettered as a field of grass. Also, through enlargement and segmentation, I have encountered hitherto undiscovered potentials in the existing objects and allowed trivialities to proudly reveal themselves through an elevation of the object. This is how, through encountering and exploring the minutest of objects, I have expanded my capacity of contemplation, beginning from triviality and transitioning on to contemplating humanity, existence, and at times relationships, and eventually made all of this manifest. The expression of the latent landscape through an awareness of the in-between is not something that can be fixed or completed. So is my work. As my reflections evolve, my work pursues a ceaseless generation of latent expressions through diverse methods and images.
