페이퍼 퀼링(Paper Quilling)을 응용한 패션 일러스트레이션 연구

Abstract

현대 회화와의 공감 형성으로 실험과 모험의 지적인 시도가 일러스트레이션계에 일면서, 사회와 밀접하게 연관되어 있는 패션 일러스트레이션에도 보다 개성 있는 시각표현을 얻으려는 시도가 행해졌다. 자신의 감각을 보여주는 데 적절한 표현 기법을 찾는 것은 창작의 하나이며, 특히 커뮤니케이션을 전제로 대중에게 자신만의 독특한 감각을 전달해야 하는 패션 일러스트레이션은 새로운 소재와 표현기법에 대한 접근과 시도가 끊임없이 요구된다. 이에 본 연구에서는 고전적이고 로맨틱한 엘레강스 이미지를 패션 일러스트레이션에 표현함에 있어서 오랜 역사를 통해 존재해 왔으며 질감표현이 섬세한 생활공예의 하나인 페이퍼 퀼링(Paper Quilling) 기법을 응용하였다. 여성의 인체가 주는 곡선적인 아름다움, 우아한 라인의 오뜨 꾸뛰르적인 드레스와 풍성하고 고전적인 헤어스타일, 엔티크한 부채 및 핸드백, 구두 등의 액세서리를 디자인하여 로맨틱하고 고급스러운 패션 감성을 표현하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 일상 생활에서 쉽게 접할 수 있는 종이를 이용한 기법의 하나인 페이퍼 퀼링의 다양한 모양들을 패션 일러스트레이션에 복합적으로 도입하여 점묘법적인 섬세함, 독특하고 부조적인 질감표현, 수공예적인 기법으로서만이 창출할 수 있는 정교하고 자연스러운 곡선미를 담은 패션메시지를 표현함으로서, 감각적인 이미지 표현을 넘어서는 새로운 형식의 패션 일러스트레이션 창출을 통한 패션 일러스트레이션 표현기법의 예술적 영역 확대에 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구의 내용 및 방법은 이론적 배경으로 패션 일러스트레이션의 개념과 역사를 문헌을 통해 살펴보고, 전시작품, 출판물 및 기타 잡지 등의 매체를 통해 자료를 수집하여 기능 및 표현유형을 살펴보았으며, 국내외 문헌과 인터넷 검색자료를 중심으로 페이퍼 퀼링 기법의 개념 및 기원을 고찰하고 국내외 작품들을 표집하고 분석하여 기법이 실제로 활용되는 모습을 정리하였다. 작품 제작에 있어서는 디자이너스지와 머메이드지를 퀼링용 툴을 이용해 다양한 단위형태의 코일로 만든 후 각각의 코일들을 복합적으로 구성한 총 10점의 패션 일러스트레이션을 제작하였다. 색채는 레드, 그린, 블루, 블랙, 브라운, 화이트 색조에 각각 3~6단계의 그라데이션을 주어 화사하면서도 로맨틱한 무드와 함께 작품 전체에서 다양한 색감의 조화가 느껴지도록 디자인하였다. 본 연구를 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 이론적 연구를 통해 오랜 역사 속에서 형성된 페이퍼 퀼링 기법이 과거에 존재했던 공예의 하나로서만이 아닌, 현대 공예를 비롯하여 다양한 작품에서 충분히 활용되고 있으며 그 쓰임의 폭이 넓고 다양하기 때문에 보다 더 새로운 장르의 작품에서 충분히 활용할 가치가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 둘째, 페이퍼 퀼링 기법에 있어서 윤곽선 안을 채우는 데 사용한 단위형태인 작은 코일들은 붓으로 그린 것 같은 점묘법적인 섬세한 작업을 가능하게 하여 다양한 색채와 독특한 입체적 재질감을 표현할 수 있게 하였다. 셋째, 페이퍼 퀼링 기법에 있어서 폐쇄형과 개방형 코일의 간격이 촘촘하게 밀집된 경우에는 패브릭의 다양한 질감을 표현할 수 있고, 간격을 두고 배치했을 경우에는 부조적인 장식 디테일이 부각되는 요철효과의 표현을 가능케 하였다. 넷째, 페이퍼 퀼링 기법에서 보여지는 종이 띠의 다양한 곡선미와 섬세함, 독특한 입체적 재질감, 종이 결에 의한 음영효과, 그리고 장식적인 디테일이 주는 고풍스러움 등의 효과가 작품의 로맨틱하고 클래식한 패션 이미지를 새롭게 표현하는데 적합하여 기법의 독특함을 이용한 새로운 예술적 가치 창출이 가능함을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 페이퍼 퀼링 기법을 이용한 패션 일러스트레이션 작품이 정교함과 새로움으로 표현 기법을 새롭게 확장시킬 수 있으며 또한 그 예술적 가치부여의 가능성을 확인할 수 있었다. 앞으로 다양한 종이소재의 개발과 종이를 벗어난 새로운 소재의 발견을 통해 페이퍼 퀼링 기법이 보다 독특하고 예술적으로 표현되기를 바란다.;Intellectual attempts of experiment and challenge began to appear in the area of illustration which has formed a common area with modern painting. Thus, in fashion illustration, which is closely associated with society, attempts to obtain more individual visual expression have also been done. To seek a suitable method of expression to show one's own sense is one of art creations. Especially, fashion llustration, where one's unique sense has to be shown to the public on the basis of communication, constantly requires approaches and attempts towards new materials and methods of expression. Accordingly, this study Accordingly, this study has attempted to explore a certain possibility to create a new fashion illustration by applying paper quilling method, which has existed for a long time, is one of life arts, and is delicate in textile expression, thereby expressing the beauty of curves of female body and advanced expression of fashion sensitivity to the haute couture dresses, model poses and hair styles. This study aims to contribute to expansion of the art area in the fashion illustration expression methods, by introducing various shapes of paper quilling, which is one of the methods to use paper which is easily accessible in daily life, to fashion illustration in general, and thus expressing the sensitivity of fashion that contains delicate and natural beauty of curves, which can be only expressed by pointillistic precision, unique and raised textile expression and hand-made artistic methods. As for contents and methods of the study, literatures on theories and the history of fashion illustration were reviewed; data were collected through literatures, exhibition works, publications and other magazines and media; and the kind and expression methods of them were xamined. Also, focusing on national and international literatures and Internet data, the paper quilling method, and its conception and origin were examined; national and international works were analyzed and the actual usage of the methods were described and arranged. The ten works produced based on this had the following processes. By using designers paper and mermaid paper, which are usually used for paper quilling nationally, small coils are made manually using quilling tools. Then, they are moved to the designed works precisely one by one to fill outlines. Each gradation of 3-6 stages was given to colors such as red, green, blue, black, brown and white, so it was designed such that the harmony of various colors with bright and romantic mood may be expressed in general. Conclusions in the study are as follows: First, the paper quilling method that has been formed by theoretical studies for a long history is widely used for modern works, not just for industrial arts of the past. Since its use is extensive and various, there is clearly a possibility that it can be used for the latest works of a new genre. Second, the small coils that were used to fill outlines make brush painting-like delicate works possible, and it was found from art work production that they were suitable to express unique dimensional textual sense. Third, when the intervals of coils for closed style and open style are dense in the paper quilling method, various textile senses of fabric can be expressed, and when arranged with intervals, it became possible to express unevenness effects to emphasize detailed raised decorations. Fourth, it was found that the effects such as beauty of various curves and delicacy of paper band, unique three dimensional quality, shady effects of paper texture, classic moods of detailed decoration, which are expressed in the paper quilling method, are suitable to newly express the romantic and classic fashion images of the works, thereby creating unique values of art. This study has found a possibility of expression by the paper quilling method in fashion illustration. I hope that the art area in fashion illustration is more expanded in the future by developing various paper materials and constantly researching new paper quilling methods.
