한국의 솟대의 조형성을 응용한 의상디자인 연구

Abstract

복식은 문화를 표현하는 상징적 양상으로 문화체계의 일부이며 문화적 전통의 한 표현 현상으로 그 시대의 가치관과 시대정신 및 감성들이 복합적으로 작용하여 만들어지는 미적 가치를 지닌 대상이다. 그러므로 세계 각국의 패션을 비롯한 문화양식의 현대적 표현은 그 속에 전 세대에 의해 공유 축적되고 세대를 통하여 학습되어온 각국 고유의 전통적 미의식이 내재되어 있다고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 이유로 많은 디자이너들이 민족의 고유성 내지는 그 민족의 미의식에 기초한 문화를 주제로 한 작품들을 발표하면서 민족의 고유성, 민족의 정체감을 확인시키고자 노력하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 우리 민족의 정서와 미의식이 반영된 솟대를 의상에 접목시킴으로써 그 정신적 바탕의 상징성을 규명하는 것과 동시에 우리의 미의식의 새로운 인식을 통하여 현대 예술과의 연결의 가능성을 찾고자 하였다. 이를 통해 우리 문화에 대한 올바른 인식은 물론 그 문화적 우수성을 토대로 창의적인 디자인을 개발 방향을 제시하여 급변하는 시대감각에 부흥하는 의상으로 발전시키는데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구를 위한 이론적 배경으로는 첫째, 한국의 민속신앙과 미의식에 대한 일반적 개념을 통해 한국 미의식의 특징을 자연미, 단순미, 해학미로 나누고 우리의 미의식이 바탕이 된 현대 의상디자인을 형태, 색채, 소재, 문양으로 분류하여 알아보았다. 또한 이를 현대 패션으로 전개시킨 작가와 디자이너들의 작품을 살펴보았다. 둘째, 솟대의 일반적 개념과 기능, 유형과 상징성을 고찰하고 솟대의 조형성을 수직과 수평, 공간성, 단순미로 나누어 분석하였다. 또 현대 예술작품에 표현된 솟대의 응용 사례를 살펴보았다. 이러한 이론적 배경을 토대로 솟대의 조형적 특징을 모티브로 재구성하고, 다양한 기법을 응용하여 총 8점의 작품을 제작하였으며 그 연구결과를 통하여 얻어진 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국인의 미의식은 보편적으로 자연적인 조화에 기준을 둔 자연미, 인위적 표현을 자제한 단순함으로 표현되는 소박미, 대담한 표현의 과장으로 웃음 짓게 하는 해학미로 나눌 수 있으며 이는 우리의 문화의 정신적 바탕을 이루고 있음을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 우리 고유의 민속신앙물로서 솟대는 자연적 재료의 특징을 그대로 살린 긴 장대와 꾸밈없이 간략화하여 표현된 염원의 매개체인 새로 구성되어 있다. 또한 한국 고유의 미의식인 자연미, 소박미, 해학미가 함축적으로 표현되어 있으며 우리의 조형감각이 담겨져 있는 상징적 조형물이다. 셋째, 솟대의 조형성은 수직과 수평, 공간성, 단순미로 나눌 수 있으며, 이는 과장, 축소, 변화, 재조합의 과정을 거쳐 의상에 도입됨으로써 새로운 미적 공간으로 창출될 수 있다. 넷째, 솟대의 조형성은 도식화되어 평면화되거나 또는 부조적으로 표현되는 등 다양하게 접근할 수 있는 모티브이며 이러한 특징은 패턴화되어 보편적인 디자인을 창출하는데 적절하다. 다섯째, 복식에 솟대를 표현함에 있어 누빔, 패치워크, 염색 등의 기법은 솟대의 수직과 수평, 공간의 활용을 극대화하는데 적절한 기법이며, 더 나아가 표현의 영역을 확장할 수 있다. 또한 다양한 염색으로 사용된 붓염, 묘염, 발포염은 소재의 또 다른 연출을 가능하게 하여 작품의 완성도와 창의적인 표현을 가능하게 하였다. 이와 같이 한국 고유의 미의식이 반영된 솟대의 조형성을 의상에 도입함으로써 솟대의 무한한 표현 가능성을 발견할 수 있으며 이를 통하여 의상의 예술적 표현 증대를 확인할 수 있다. 앞으로도 솟대의 조형성을 현대 디자인에 접목시킴으로써 예술적 개념으로 승화시키고 우리 고유의 미의식을 표현하며, 또한 우리 문화의 올바른 전개와 발전의 가능성을 모색할 수 있으리라 본다.;Fashion not only constitutes the cultural system as symbolic aspects to express the culture but also is expression of cultural tradition, and is a subject with the aesthetic value through complex interaction of the values, the spirit and the emotion of the times. So, it seems that modernistic expressions of cultural modes including international fashions involve the characteristic traditional aesthetic senses of the country, which have been shared and accumulated by the previous generations and learned from generation to generation. For that reason, many designers have tried to define the national characteristics or identity by presenting works on the subject of cultures based on characteristics or aesthetic senses of the nations. Based on the above background, this study attempted to find a potential of connection with the modern arts through new recognition on the Korean aesthetic senses while to define spirit-based symbolism by applying the Sottae, which reflects the Korean emotions and aesthetic senses, to the modern fashion. In addition, this study was to create fashion designs available of answering the rapidly changing sense of the times by showing a desirable direction to develop creative designs on the basis of the cultural excellence as well as the correct recognition of the Korean culture. The theoretical backgrounds of this study are as follows; First, the general concept, functions, types and symbolism of the Sottae were examined and its formativeness was analyzed by dividing it into verticality and horizontality, spatiality and simplicity. Also, illustrations of the Sottae expressed in the modern arts were examined. Second, characteristics of the Korean aesthetic senses were analyzed with the general concept, and some works of artists and designers who defined the value and developed it into the modern fashion were reviewed by classifying aesthetic characteristics of the Korean fashion into forms, colors, materials and patterns. Based on these theoretical backgrounds, formative properties of the Sottae were recomposed as the motif, and various techniques were used, and the total eight suits of clothes were produced. The results of this study are as follows; First, as the result of considering the Sottae based on the Korean aesthetic senses as a folk religious subject, the Sottae contains the characteristic Korean aesthetic senses and the formative senses, and can be expressed variously as a motif of design. Second, formativeness of the Sottae can be divided into verticality and horizontality, spatiality and simplicity, and it can be created as new aesthetic space via the processes including exaggeration, reduction, change or recombination to be introduced in fashions. Third, techniques such as lining, patchwork and dyeing in expressing the Sottae in clothes facilitated expressions of spatiality and volume and further, they expanded the range of expression. Fourth, since the Sottae reflecting the Korean characteristic aesthetic senses provided uniqueness and diversity by its formativeness to clothes, the improved artistic expressions of clothes could be confirmed. As mentioned above, infinite expressible potentialities of the Sottae can be found by introducing formativeness of the Sottae into the fashion. In future, I expect that the aesthetic concept will be sublimed, the Korean traditional aesthetic sense will be expressed and potential of correct development and advance of the Korean culture will be found, by applying formativeness of the Sottae to the modern fashion.
