Abstract
This document is a research on Geun-Yong Lee’s opera . After the premier in 2001, has been one of the most frequently performed operas in Korea with a high level of reputation and popularity, and that is an unusual phenomenon in Korean music society. Also, its extraordinary musical achievements gave a new direction to Korean modern operas. Geun-Yong Lee was a composer emphasizing the importance of communication between music and listeners. Therefore, unlike other Korean operas, shows a great sense of humor within a simple story to make people easily follow and enjoy the opera. Lee wrote the libretto himself based on a novel written by Yoo-Jung Kim. Although many parts of the libretto are from the novel, the meaning of the word “Bom(spring)”, main characters, and it ending are different, giving a different impression to the audience. Also, considering special characteristics of Korean pronunciation and the literary nuance from words became another crucial asset of Lee. Unlike other grand operas, Lee used a minimum numbers of characters, instruments, and stage settings. Its small size of the stage and the story having a sense of humor and rapid progression are the influences of “Kyogen,” a Japanese comedy genre. In , the music reflects and describes the psychological statuses of the characters. Also, an extraordinary mixture of the Korean music and the Western music makes the opera even more attractive. Its various attempts of using the features of the Korean traditional music such as instruments, rhythms, and Pansori, a type of Korean traditional opera, makes having a strong Korean originality.
