Abstract
The effect of supplementary food on the breeding of Black-billed Magpies Pica pica was studied in a half-urbanized habitat in the city of Dajeon, Korea. I provided additional food to randomly selected experimental pairs during periods from pre-laying until hatching, and tested if increased food availability in these stages (1) proximately limits breeding and (2) has a long-term effect on breeding possibly by enhancing the parental condition. Although the onset of laying was not affected, extra food significantly enlarged the clutch size of supplemented group. Egg lengths (long axes of eggs) of supplemented group were less variable than those of control group which showed significant differences between early-laying and late-laying pairs. Also, food supplementation resulted in fledglings with better body condition and greater breeding success (proportion of eggs that resulted in fledged young). Curvilinear relationship was found between fledging sex ratio and clutch size for both supplemented and control groups, and food supplementation shifted the location of optimal sex ratio towards larger clutch size. My results suggest that food supplementation increases breeding success by enhancing the condition of parents. I conclude that egg production in Korean Black-billed magpies is limited by food availability early in the season, supporting the constraint hypothesis.
