저항적 하위문화에 대한 일 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 폭주족 하위문화를 지배문화와의 관계 속에서 파악함으로써 문화적 영역에서 발생하는 지배와 저항의 의미를 독해하려는 시도이다. 다시말해 청소년들의 폭주행위를 통해 지배문화의 상징폭력에 대한 하위문화의 저항적 실천을 알아보는 것이다. 지배문화 혹은 지배이데올로기는 기본적으로 한 사회의 지배적인 계급, 성, 연령, 인종 집단의 가치와 신념을 반영하며, 여기서 지배집단의 임의적인 가치기준은 옳은 것, 정당한 것 등을 구분짓고 모든 구성원에게 보편적인 것으로 제시된다. 이것은 가족이나 학교, 미디어와 같은 구체적인 제도를 통해 재생산하게 되는데, 그러한 과정에서 불평등한 권력관계는 자연스럽게 체화된다는 점에서 일종의 상징폭력이다. 그러나 지배이데올로기는 사회의 모든 국면을 완벽히 통제하고 관철되는 것은 아니다. 지배가 있는 곳에는 저항이 있기 마련이고, 하위문화의 영역이 바로 지배-권력과 문화 주체들의 상징적 투쟁이 일어나는 장소인 것이다. 폭주족 역시 이러한 하위문화의 한 형태이다. 일반적으로 지배체계로부터 이탈한 폭주족은 사회적인 통제의 대상이 된다. 이때 통제의 방식은 국가의 직접적인 단속이나 처벌 혹은 미디어를 통한 대중적인 담론 형성인데 이 때 폭주족은 부정적으로 이미지화됨으로써 통제에 대한 정당성이 확보되는 것이다. 이에 반해 청소년들에게 폭주족은 일종의 동경의 대상이며 잠정적인 폭주의 가능성을 제공한다고 할 수 있다. 앞서 처벌과 통제의 차원에서는 이에 대한 근본적인 해답을 제공할 수 없으며 이것은 사회 내에서 폭주족 하위문화가 발생하게 되는 맥락과 이들 문화에서 만들어지는 폭주의 의미를 통해서만 이해되어질 수 있는 것이다. 폭주족 하위문화는 대체로 10대의 청소년이라는 세대적인 공통점이 있는데, 이들에게 있어 학력주의나 권위주의와 같은 지배이데올로기는 가족 혹은 학교를 통해 적극적으로 주입된다. 그러나 지배체계의 통제와 가치들에서 그들은 일정한 공통된 반항적 가치를 발전시키며 폭주족이라는 독특한 하위문화를 형성하게 된다. 이들 하위문화 구성원들이 공유하고 있는 중심적 가치들은 그들의 폭주행위에 의미를 부여하게 되는 바탕이 되며 또 그러한 의미의 소통은 즐거움올 제공한다. 이와 같이 폭주족의 하위문화적 실천이 지배이데올로기에 대한 상징투쟁이라고 할 때, 본 연구는 지배이데올로기에 대한 저항적 실천으로서의 하위문화를 이들의 가치관, 스타일, 즐거움, 정체성을 통해서 살펴보고자 한다.;This study is intended to interprete the meaning of domination and resistance ocurred in the sphere of culture by understanding the relationship between dominant culture and motorbikers as a subculture. It examines the resistant behaviors of juveniles' motorbike riding as a sort of sub-culture against symbolic violence of dominant culture. Basically dominant culture or dominant ideology represents the value and belief posessed by dominant classes, sex, ages and races. The criteria on value defined by dominant circles are suggested to all the community members as an universal basis to determine what is right or wrong. The dominant value and belief are reproduced by social institutions, such as family, school and media, and unequal power relationship formulated through the process is embodied into community members. Dominant ideology, however, can not control all the phases of society. It is natural that resistance happens against domination. The sphere of subculture is the place where the symbolic conflicts among diverse cultural bodies happen. A group named motorbikers is a sort of sub-culture. The motorbikers who are deviated from the society's dominant system become the target of control. It is accomplished by means of direct regulation and punishment by authorities, or condemination over them based on popular ideology which advocates dominant values. On the contrary, motorbikers are the object of envy for a number of teenagers today. It means that lots of youths have a potentiality to be a motorbiker. Therefore, punishment and control can not be the fundamental solution for so-called motorbiker-delinquency but understanding the meaning and cause of youths' moterbike riding needs to be preceded. Motorbikers' subculture is shared mainly by teenagers who are forced to accept dominant ideology through family, school and other social mechanisms. As a result, they have developed a kind of common values against such a dominant system and one of their resistant values has appeared as an unique subculture, moterbiker. Since subcultural behaviors can be defined as a symbolized struggle against dominant ideology, this study regards motorbikers as a sort of subculture, and analyzes their values, style, pleasure and identity.
