Felix Mendelssohn의 초기 가곡에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 독일 낭만주의의 대표적 작곡가중의 한 사람인 펠릭스 멘델스존(Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn, 1809~1847)의 초기 가곡에 관한 연구이다. 멘델스존은 대부분의 작곡가들이 가난과 불행 속에서 어렵게 살았던 것과는 달리 유복한 환경에서 자란 작곡가로 유럽 여러 나라의 여행을 통해 많은 작곡자나 철학자들과 친분을 쌓았으며, 여행지에서의 자연의 느낌과 문학에서 받은 영감을 소재로 하여 작품을 썼다. 그는 작곡뿐만 아니라 피아니스트, 지휘자로서도 뛰어난 재능을 보였으며, 바하(J.S.Bach, 1685~1750)의 음악을 다시 세상 밖으로 이끌어내는 역할을 하였다. 멘델스존이 가곡 작곡가로서 크게 인지되지 않고 있는 것은 사실이지만, 실제로 그는 38세의 짧은 생애동안 80여편에 달하는 많은 가곡을 작곡하였다. 그의 가곡은 대부분 서정적이고 아름다운 낭만주의적 특성을 내포하고 있지만, 극적인 것들도 있었다. 본 논문에서는 멘델스존의 대표적 초기 가곡들 중「마녀의 노래(Hexenlied)」로도 알려져 있는「다른 5월의 노래, Op.8 No.8(Andres Maienlied)」,「새로운 사랑, Op.19 No.4(Neue Liebe)」,「노래의 날개위에 Op.34 No.2(Auf Flu¨geln des Gesanges)」,「줄라이카, Op.34 No.4(Suleika)」등을 분석하였다. 「다른 오월의 노래」는 독일 중부지방 하르츠의 브로케산에 산다는 마녀 카수에 대한 전설을 극적으로 표현한 횔티(L.C.H.Ho¨lty, 1748~1776)의 시에 곡을 붙인 것이다. Allegro vivace 빠르기와 격렬한 가사를 가졌으며 변형된 유절형식을 따른다. 전체가 A-A'의 2부 형식을 가진다. 극적인 표현을 위하여 반음계적 화성에 기초한 진행과 다이나믹(dynamic)의 대조를 사용하였다. 제 2곡「새로운 사랑」은 하이네의 시에 곡을 붙인 작품으로 새롭게 시작하는 연인의 사랑을 다소 극적으로 표현한 것이다. 변형된 유절형식을 따르고 있으며, A-A'-A"의 3부 형식에 Presto 빠르기를 가진 곡이다. 전조는 관계조 안에서 이루어지며 전주부분에서의 선율이 모든 간주와 후주에서 동일하게 사용되어 곡 전체에 통일성을 주는 역할을 한다. 제 3곡「노래의 날개위에」는 하이네(H.Heine, 1797~1856)의 시집 '서정적 간주곡(Lyrisches Intermezzo)'중 9번째 시로 작곡된 작품이다. A♭장조를 주요 조성으로 하는 곡으로 관계조 안에서 전조를 보이고 있다. A-B-A'의 3부 형식이며, 변형된 유절형식이다. 반주에서는 하프를 연상시키는 아르페지오 음형과 함께 낭만주의의 전형인 반음계적 선율을 보인다. 제 4곡「줄라이카」는 빠르기와 조성으로 가사의 내용을 표현한다는 특징을 가지고 있다. 괴테(J.W.von Goethe, 1749~1832)의 '서동 시집(Westo¨stlicher Diva- n, 1819)'에 수록된 시 'Suleika'로 작곡된 곡으로 사랑의 그리움을 노래하고 있다. 필자가 멘델스존의 초기 가곡을 논문 주제로 삼은 이유는 멘델스존이 음악사적으로도 훌륭할 뿐 아니라 가곡에 있어서도 선율이 아름다운 곡들을 작곡했으나, 오늘날「노래의 날개 위에」이외에는 거의 연주되지 않고 그 연구 또한 미비하기 때문에 이러한 그의 작품을 상기하고 실제 연주에 도움이 되기 위함이다.;This thesis is a research paper on the early songs of the composer, Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn (1809~1847), who is a representative of German Romanticism. Unlike other composers who underwent hardships and poverty, Mendelssohn grew up in an affluent environment. He was able to establish close relation- ships with various composers and philosophers through his extensive travels in Europe. Many of his works were inspired by literature and the nature he experienced on his journeys. He was not only a composer but also a pianist and a talented conductor. In addition, he reintroduced the works of J.S.Bach (1685~1750) to the world. Although Mendelssohn is not noted as a writer of songs, he composed over 80 songs throughout his short life of 38 years. A great proportion of his songs are lyrical and romantic, but some are more dramatic. This thesis analyzes four representative songs,「Andres Maienlied, Op.8 No.8」(better known as「Hexenlied」),「Neue Liebe, Op.19 No.4」,「Auf Flu¨geln des Gesanges Op.34 No.2」and「Suleika, Op.34 No.4」. The song「Andres Maienlied」is based on a legend about a witch who lives in the mountains. It was composed as music added to the poetry of L.C.H. Ho¨lty (1748~1776). The lyrics are intense and the piece follows the modified strophic form with an allegro vivace tempo. It consist of A-A form. Contrast of dynamics and progressions based on the harmony of the chrom- atic scale are used to heighten intensity for dramatic effect. 「Neue Liebe」is a song based on a poem of H.Heine (1797~1856), which describes the commencement of love in a dramatic way. It follows the modif- ied strophic form, and can be expressed as A-A'-A". The modulations are effected within the relative keys and the song is given unity by using an identical melody in prelude, interlude, and postlude. The「Auf Flu¨geln des Gesanges」is the ninth poem from the poetry collecti- on of Heine, 'Lyrisches Intermezzo'. The piece uses A♭ Major as its domin- ant tonality, exhibiting modulation within relative keys. It consists of A-B-A form, and a modified strophic form. The accompaniment presents a typical chromatic scale commonly found in Romanticism along with an arpeggio that is reminiscent of the harp. 「Suleika」employs tempo and tonality to express the content of the lyrics. This piece sings of the yearnings of love and the lyrics were taken from the poetry collection of J.W.von Goethe (1749~1832) to be integrated with the melody. The early songs of Mendelssohn was chosen as the topic of this thesis bec- ause only few songs by Mendelssohn, such as「Auf Flu¨geln des Gesanges Op.34 No.2」, are being performed at present despite the beautiful melodies Mendelssohn's songs possess. Analysis of his songs have also been insuffici- ent compared to the value of his works. Therefore, this thesis is to reassess his works and provide practical aid to the performance of the songs.
