With the impending opening of the local medical service market to overseas competitors, people's need for quality health service are becoming more diversified than ever. Consequently, nurses will be asked to play more expanded roles and their professional service for the nurses' corresponding information environment is also necessary, so that the nurses can return what they obtained from the information in the form of improved service and equip themselves with stronger competitive edge, all in a bid to better-respond to the opening market. However, majority of the previous studies on the information needs and use behavior sector was conducted on physicians, Interns and Residents. The study on user behavior by Korean nurses were non-existent and unprecedented. This study attempted to analyze the information needs and use behavior of nurses for more efficient information use and information service. In order to carry out this study, literature review, interview and field survey on actual users and staffs of the medical library were used. Literature survey was conducted to review the application and characteristics of nursing, tasks and roles of nurses, information service of medical library, and user training for characteristics and nurses. Interviews and questionnaires were used to analyze the information needs and use behaviors of nurses and the current situations of medical libraries. The questionnaires were handed out to the 360 nurses currently working in 18 university hospitals with the capacity of over 500 beds. 337 (93.5%) out of 360 surveys were filled in and collected and anlyzed. I also gave another set of questionnaires to 18 medical library staff, 17 (94.4%) of which returned with their response. The analysis results are as follows; First, the problems associated with patient care took the largest part of the information needed by the nurses, followed by purposes for lectures or conferences, the latest news about nursing as a professional field, research purposes, and patient education purposes. Second, the most frequently used information materials were academic journals, followed by books, thesis papers and the Internet. Third, with regard to the use frequency of nursing and medical materials, the largest number of the nurses favored nursing journals in descending order. Also, the nurses said they looked into the areas of adult patient care and basic nursing most frequently, then nursing management, mother and child care and nursing research. Fourth, when using literatures, the nurses depended heavily on domestic data. As for overseas data, the vast majority was produced in English-speaking countries. No nurses responded that they ever used data from Japan or Germany. Fifth, most nurses were using the publications and periodicals that were no older than three years. And, anything older than 6 years was hardily used. Sixth, the best choice of the second information source was MEDLINE, followed by the CINAHL and periodical index. Seventh, most nurses were using the libraries located inside their hospitals as the main channel to obtain work-related information. On contrary to its high accessibility, medical library was also the source of the highest level of dissatisfaction. Information channels varied greatly, depending on nurses' different information needs and different professional status. Eighth, many nurses said they were having trouble obtaining necessary information mainly due to the lack of nursing-related publications in the library. The most demanded publications were in the order of journals, books and thesis papers. Ninth, nurses were urgently demanding that the library collection of nursing-related publication be immediately increased. Other demands included more in-depth training for library users, extension of admission hours, and improvement of information services. On the basis of the findings, this study suggests the followings; First, to ensure more efficient library use by nurses, user education should be integrate in the regular nursing school curriculum. Second, the librarians working in medical library should take more active roles in publicizing the services and information materials offered by the library, by encouraging nurses to participate in conferences or field training. Third, the number of nursing-related publications should be increased immediately and there should be more balanced development of the new publications. Fourth, the book selection committee of medical library must include nurses, the number of which should be proportional to the number of other professions. Also, the nurses in the committee should try to make other nurses more aware of the tasks and services of the library. Fifth, medical library should have more systematic control over nursing department collection to prevent overlapping data. Also, the library should maintain a close relationship with the nursing department to better understand the nurses' demands and further encourage them to use practical data. Sixth, the admission hours need to the extended, considering the nurses' usual 3-shift work rounds. Seventh, for more professional and user-oriented services, the medical library needs staff solely in charge of information services in order to provide more active services like in the case of clinical medical library. Therefore, the library needs staff reinforcement.;의료서비스의 국제화, 개방화와 함께 다양해지는 사람들의 건강요구에 부응하기 위하여 간호사의 역할이 확대됨은 물론 그 전문성 또한 심화되고 있다. CINAHL(Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature),
